Kottkamp and Crist : Oceans Apart

January 31, 2010 Uncategorized 14 Comments

With all of the attention focused on the Congressional, State and the Senate race(s) here in Florida, there hasn’t been much talk about who will replace Attorney General Bill McCollum in November.  Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp has decided to finish out his term as the Lt. Governor and run for the Attorney General, a state cabinet-level office.

Kottkamp was nice enough to entertain my request for an interview last weekend at one of his campaign events in South Florida. The setting for our interview was one of the newest ocean cruise line ships, the MSC Poesia, which was waiting to set sail out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. You know the lyrics from the theme song from Gilligan’s Island? Well, I found myself singing that tune in my head as got myself lost and wound up walking aimlessly in circles as I tried to exit the ship, but that story is for another time.

The Lt. Governor struck me as a very approachable and affable fellow, as well as gracious with his time.  Lt. Governor Kottkamp has played ‘second fiddle’ to Governor Crist for the last several years, but based on our little sit-down, it’s apparent to me that Kottkamp’s views on policies and issues differ sharply with Crist’s.  In my honest opinion, Governor Kottkamp is a genuine Conservative Republican who is aiming to be the next top law man in Florida, but make that decision for yourself based on our interview below.

Tea Party Debate Brews Up

January 28, 2010 Uncategorized 39 Comments

The public’s growing dissent with both the Democratic and Republican parties has revived the call for a third political party to break the present two-party monopoly in American politics.  In Florida, the “Tea Party” has officially formed and registered a political party that in our opinion will only bleed votes from the Republican Party and ensure future Democrat victories.  Opponents of the official “Tea Party” have begun to make the case why the “Tea Party” lacks the infrastructure, a coherent platform, money, or the leaders at this juncture to become a credible force in electoral politics that has the ability to get its candidates elected.

The article that follows is the first piece in what will be an ongoing series on the “Tea Party” phenomena- both as a movement, and as an official political party in the State of Florida.  The Shark Tank’s objective is to provide an open forum for a wide variety of perspectives on this topic, as we will encourage guest authors to publish their viewpoints.

Senator Carey Baker-Candidate for Agriculture Commissioner

January 28, 2010 Florida Review 11 Comments

Florida Senator Carey Baker is a candidate for the Commissioner of Agriculture, a state cabinet-level office that will become vacant later this year.  On a recent trip to Orlando, I sat down with Senator Baker to ask him about his campaign for the office, and what the transition would entail from his present position as State Senator.  Baker’s candid interview elaborates on his personal background, his political career, and makes the case why he believes he is the best candidate for the position.

Rubio Climbs as Crist Continues to Fall

No surprise here that US Senatorial candidate Marco Rubio has surpassed Governor Charlie Crist in today’s Quinnipiac poll(47-44). What is surprising to me is, that in such a short period of time,Rubio has done what many thought to be the unthinkable-sprint past Crist!

Check out the Quinnipiac Poll results here.

To add a little salt to the wound, Crist has just announced that he reported $2 million in the last quarter-far less than what he reported in  prior quarters. Rubio’s fundraising has been climbing steadily.  Rumor has it that Rubio will post a very impressive number, one comperable to what obama crist-picCrist just announced. Wink Wink. My take on it is that if Rubio reports anywhere within $400k of Crist, you will see a huge surge in campaign donations to Marco Rubio. This a morter round across the bow of the USS Crist that will inevitably mark the beginning of  end for Charlie. No wait, I stand corrected. The beginning of the end for Crist was when he embraced President Obama and his disastrous ‘porkulus’ package on stage last year.

Hold the presses! How about a little more sprinkles of salt on that wound? Marco Rubio will be the keynote speaker at what is know to be the center of the universe for Conservative around the country-CPAC. Last year’s keynote speaker was non other than  the Majarushie himself, Rush Limbaugh. Rush has publicly stated that he likes Rubio and  said that he is ‘Reagan-like’.

This just in moments ago, Rubio announces $1.75M Quarter…what did I tell you?!

In preparation for her grand performance, the fat lady has begun her warm up…

Rubio’s Journey from 4 to 43%

The city of Miami boasts of having beautiful beaches, year-round sunshine and a bustling nightlife. The city is heavily influenced by Cuban exiles that fled the Castro Regime in Cuba after his seizure of power in 1959.  Indelibly scarred by the loss of their country and their culture, the Cuban-American community has come to play an extremely influential role within our country’s political landscape-and this next year will be no exception.

Principles over Politics?

January 22, 2010 Uncategorized 17 Comments

Up until now, I have not put in my two cents worth in the Special Election congressional race in Florida’s CD 19. District 19 is Robert Wexler’s old seat- you know, the ex-Congressman from Maryland.  So far, I’ve had the opportunity to watch a few debates where the three Republican primary challengers seemed less than friendly towards each other as they exchanged barbs, but that’s not to be unexpected in a tough political campaign.

Top Gun Fighter Pilot Takes Aim in Florida’s Congressional District 24

January 20, 2010 Uncategorized 7 Comments

This past weekend, the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) held its quarterly meeting up in Orlando.   While there, I was able to meet up with Tom Garcia,  a candidate for Congress in Florida’s 24th Congressional District.  Garcia faces a primary battle with two other establishment-type politicos, and should he win, he will face Democrat incumbent Suzanne Kosmas.  Garcia is a married father of two and a former Navy fighter pilot.

Illegal Immigration’s Growing Crime Wave

January 6, 2010 Uncategorized No Comments

One of direct consequences of our nation’s open borders policy are the high rates of crime committed by and the incarceration of illegal immigrants who have taken advantage of our lax border security and the willfully negligent non-enforcement of our immigration law. Apologists for illegal immigration remind us ad nauseum that vast majorities of illegal immigrants are not criminals, are here to work, and continue to obey the law once here (except of course our immigration laws, which were broken upon their arrival here).

However, for these same apologists to deny that there is a significant criminal element associated with the total illegal population- one that is only growing – is simply to deny reality.   Spikes in the reported numbers of murders, rapes, batteries, kidnappings, and vehicular homicides committed by illegal immigrants are the documented facts that only the invincibly ignorant can continue to ignore.  And it’s these same numbers that are heightening the awareness of increasing numbers of Americans to the serious consequences of an open borders policy, as well as motivating their insistence that our elected officials stop with their meaningless rhetoric or the pointless half-measures they’ve typically proposed to deal with an issue that they would much prefer to ignore.

Predictably, the spike in the illegal crime wave affects the cities and metro areas in closest proximity to the southern border. Among the most noteworthy incidents are kidnappings that have taken place within the city of Phoenix, in all likelihood perpetrated by Mexican drug gangs. These kidnappings that have been reported by various national media outlets, the same national media which have been reluctant at best to accurately report on the more gruesome crimes associated with illegal aliens. With the Federal Border Patrol both understaffed and overwhelmed by the sheer masses of illegal immigrants, and the Federal Government unwilling to enforce Federal Immigration Law already on the books, local law enforcement is often the last line of defense.

One local law enforcement official who has set the standard for effective immigration enforcement is Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.   Taking up the lead on this issue, and in spite of the numerous vocal critics who condemn his tactics, he has instructed his deputies to strictly enforce existing federal immigration laws without apology. He has asked for, and is receiving assistance from Federal Immigration officials in the form of training for his deputies about federal immigration law and the enforcement of those laws.   Sheriff Arpaio has gained national attention for his efforts and his set a standard for law enforcement agencies across the country with regards to illegal immigration control. Sheriff Arpaio’s bold stand and success with regards to immigration enforcement appears to be serving as a catalyst for other local law enforcement agencies across the country to start enforcing federal immigration law within their own jurisdictions.

Curious, I decided to probe what local law enforcement in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties are doing to curb illegal immigration. I attempted to contact both the Miami-Dade Police and to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). After repeated efforts to speak with anyone within the BSO who was willing to speak on the record about how the BSO deals with illegal immigrants, I ultimately gave up and took their reticence as a clear indicator that they were not enforcing Federal immigration law.

I then contacted the Miami-Dade Police department, and at the very least, they must be commended for being forthcoming to me with regards to detailing their policies for dealing with illegal immigrants. That said, the Department’s passivity towards enforcing immigration law is most disappointing.   According to Miami-Dade Police spokesman Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, the department will not get involved whatsoever in the enforcement of federal immigration law because, according to him, the police do not want to lose the trust of its citizens.  “The Miami-Dade Police department is a law enforcement agency. It will enforce all laws within its jurisdiction and arrest all lawbreakers, whether or not they are an illegal immigrant or a US citizen,” Zabaleta explained.

What this department-speak means in very real terms is that the Miami-Dade Police are not going to attempt to enforce Federal immigration law.

(***This can also be interpreted in that any and all laws on the books are enforceable. So if Tallahassee can get its act together and pass a law mandating local law enforcement agencies to enforce immigration law, then that law will be enforced. At least the Miami-Dade Police seems to be up to the task

My take is that there are so many illegal immigrants that, the police need them to help report and solve crimes. “If the immigrants are in fear of being arrested, they will not assist law enforcement”.

Detective Zabaleta did tell me that Miami-Dade Police assists agencies like ICE on raids and other federal immigration issues. I asked him, if approached by officials higher up in the food chain to broaden the department’s immigration enforcement, would it comply?

The answer was a big ‘maybe’. This would be a judgment call that will have to be made by Police Director Robert L. Parker. Director Parker was not available for comment.

In Miami-Dade County, there are approximately 3000 individuals affiliated with gangs. According to the gang unit, gang activity and membership is down. The unit has been very active in infiltrating and breaking up gang activity. What I also learned was that the notorious MS 13, the murderous Salvadorian drug gang, has peaked it’s head out in Miami. The agency boasts that it has MS 13, as well as the other gangs, under constant pressure and confinement.

This is good to know.

The illegal immigration issue is not going away. This issue will need to be addressed by both law enforcement and elected officials. We need to start taking a very closer look at what is going on at our border and the consequences are in our neighborhoods.***)
