Kottkamp and Crist : Oceans Apart

January 31, 2010 Uncategorized 14 Comments

With all of the attention focused on the Congressional, State and the Senate race(s) here in Florida, there hasn’t been much talk about who will replace Attorney General Bill McCollum in November.  Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp has decided to finish out his term as the Lt. Governor and run for the Attorney General, a state cabinet-level office.

Kottkamp was nice enough to entertain my request for an interview last weekend at one of his campaign events in South Florida. The setting for our interview was one of the newest ocean cruise line ships, the MSC Poesia, which was waiting to set sail out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. You know the lyrics from the theme song from Gilligan’s Island? Well, I found myself singing that tune in my head as got myself lost and wound up walking aimlessly in circles as I tried to exit the ship, but that story is for another time.

The Lt. Governor struck me as a very approachable and affable fellow, as well as gracious with his time.  Lt. Governor Kottkamp has played ‘second fiddle’ to Governor Crist for the last several years, but based on our little sit-down, it’s apparent to me that Kottkamp’s views on policies and issues differ sharply with Crist’s.  In my honest opinion, Governor Kottkamp is a genuine Conservative Republican who is aiming to be the next top law man in Florida, but make that decision for yourself based on our interview below.

  1. Speedy Gonzalez says:

Jeff Kottkamp is a class act. He is just an all around good guy. I wish we could say that about other politicians. He has my support

  2. Patrick says:

Kottkamp has my support as well!

  3. Floria Republicans against Crist! says:

As conservative Republican voters here in Florida… If KottKamp’s views differ from Gov.Crist then he’s got our vote!!!! Go KottKamp!!

  4. Dan says:

In my opinion, Jeff Kottkamp is a well connected career politician, who hasn’t prosecuted anyone nor has he actually stood for anything. Some of us call it political rhetoric, Quid Pro Quo Class. Don’t you think we, as Floridians need and deserve a real prosecutor, someone who has been in the trenches and has actually got their hands dirty both as a prosecutor and as a defense lawyer. Well some of those reasons are why 85% of the Pinellas County REC voted in our straw poll to support Pam Bondi for the Attorney General. Maybe you can interview her also?

  5. Dan,

    Already in the works.

  6. gabriel jose Carrera says:

sounds good but only time will tell if he is truly conservative…..I hope so

  7. Robert B says:

    Dan,
You mentioned Bondi won by 85% in her core constituency group of Pinellas County REC, Isn’t that expected? Bondi has lost every other counties straw poll outside of the Tampa/St. Pete area. Her only experience is at the State Attorneys Office which does not equate the experience needed to be Attorney General.

Kottkamp keeps winning Straw polls around the state and not just at his home constituency.

Kottkamp is a remarkable guy and is a class act. He has my vote in the primary

  8. Dee says:

I want to know what the f a genuine conservative is? Didn’t Bush claim to be a genuine conservative supporting Charlie Crist singing his praises and telling people to vote for him..All the while he McCain and Kennedy wanted to vote amnesty while Wal-mart a conservative Org. supports and backed La Raza which favors the labor unions and endorces illegal immigration. I really want to know guys what the f a real conservative is.. LMAO. I’m a real conservative with no work experience or college degree and I would work circles around Marco Rubio, Charlie Crist and any GOP guy you put up. Why I have something they all lack, its a conscience and character. We the people..

  9. Marvin 33950 says:

I have known Jeff Kottkamp for many years. I have known him as an honest and hard working politician who has roots like most all Floridians. He has had to work hard and long hours for everything he has earned as an student, husband, father, son, attorney, legislator and now our Lt. Governor. There was no “silver spoon” for Jeff where he grew up or in his life less he and Cindy purchased it themselves from their hard earned savings. Florida needs a reality check. We need an Attorney General who has the knowledge and the experience within Florida that will take positions that are conservative, who will protect us all, who will enforce our laws and protect us under our State and National Constitution. Florida needs a rejuvenation of our conservatism with a new and honest face…the leadership by a fair and unbiased man….Jeff Kottkamp. I encourage everyone to seek him out and learn more about Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp and support him in the Primary.

  10. Jim in Tampa says:

He was a personal injury attorney with the law firm of Morgan & Morgan. As a staunch Republican, I’d vote for a democrat before I voted for this guy.

  11. Jerry Nelson says:

Are you kidding me? Wow, you got hoodwinked. He’s an ambulance chaser. Ask him about Tort reform…go ahead…ask him. He is not a conservative Do not be fooled

  12. Jim says:

    Jim,
Kottkamp never tried one single case or had one single client in the few months he worked with Morgan. Conversly, he worked for 17 years as an attorney who protected small businesses in court from attack of frivilous lawsuits.

I can see why the spin your weave sounds so good. Maybe you can begin researching the good bills Kottkamp passed as a legislator.

You can also look at the work he performed with as Chair of Judiciary and Judicial Appropriations. Or the anti-murder act he passed…or many years prior as a law clerk to US District Court judge working criminal cases.

Maybe you can also look at the tax incentives he has worked towards to bring high-tech business to the state. Or helping too keep our spring training franchises in Florida.

Maybe you can read into the research and work he has performed overseeing the Office of Drug Control and Office of Child Protection.

A vast and overlapping role model as lawyer, legislator, lieutenant governor and what he next aspires to be – Florida’s Attorney General.

  13. Sal Grosso says:

I have known Jeff Kottkamp since he first ran for office as the State Representative for District 74. I am also a very conservative Republican who serves as a member of the Lee County Republican Executive Committee which has always endorsed Jeff. During all of the time that I have known him, Jeff has always supported the conservative goals of less spending, lower taxes and fees, and smaller government. He is a model family man; he supports our men in uniform and is one of the most honorable people I know. He reminds me very much of our former President Ronald Reagan. A true conservative.
