Florida can use some Arizona Iced Tea on Immigration – POLL

We are one week removed from the passage of the controversial Arizona Immigration bill that sparked riots throughout Arizona and protests across the country.  However, what most of the critics of the law convienently ignore is the fact that it primarily restates the need for the enforcement of existing Federal law.  It is imperative that all states adopt a similar bill that enables state law enforcement agencies to proactively interdict persons who enter into this country illegally.  We’ve seen the rioting in Arizona, where thousands of these illegal immigrants and their supporters are shown assaulting innocent civilians and police officers by throwing rocks, bottles and whatever they can find that can be used as a projectile.  Why should any sympathy be shown for people who have such contempt for the rule of law here in America- specifically, immigration laws that the are in place in almost every country in the world, including Mexico?

For those of you that are curious, here’s Mexico’s current immigration law- if you are arrested in Mexico and found that you are there illegally, you face a fine & up to two years in jail. If you re-enter the country illegally and caught again, you face up to TEN YEARS in jail.  By the way, the police will ask for your ID in Mexico.  Our federal immigration law states that non-citizens must carry their Visa  or their green card with them at all times or face a fine or arrest.  Taking all of these facts into consideration, on what basis do Mexicans or Americans have to protest this law?   Zip, zero, nadda.

To reiterate, this novel idea is a states’ rights issue. As we have seen before in past national disasters and public riots, state governors have the sole power to activate the National Guard and command them to protect the citizens of their respective states.

With 2010 set to be one of the most important elections in our nation’s history, it will be interesting to see how many other states follow Arizona’s lead in passing a bill that will mandate the enforcement of Federal law to address the issue of illegal immigration to curtail the subsequent problems that non-enforcement has caused for well over two decades.

Critics of the bill are also concerned that racial profiling of Hispanics is a relevant issue that will lead to  violations of human rights.  First of all, criminal profiling is necessary to help protect the rights of all U.S. Citizens both at home and abroad. And yes, criminal profiling takes into consideration who one is, and where somebody is from- i.e their race and nationality.  It has proven to be successful tool used against Islamic Extremist in the Global War on Terror.   But who you are is also part of a larger criminal profile that also takes into consideration what you are doing and what a criminal’s likely motives and mindset are.

These bills are crucial to fighting radical Islamic Jihadists as well as interdicting the flow of contraband and crime that occurs everyday because of our porous borders. The drug war that ravaged Mexico over that past several years, has made its way to the streets of Arizona and other states. Countless of Americans have lost their lives due to this drug war that doesn’t seem to be letting up.

Most importantly, the issue that needs to be addressed before anything any other one is border containment. We must seal our southern and northern borders so that all illegal immigrants that are apprehended are sent back to their respective countries immediately so they do not attempt to cross the border again. Many have thought that the way to fix this problem is simply to erect a fence, but  unfortunately, a border fence is not the only solution that needs to be implemented at our borders. Border state Governors need to deploy their National Guard elements with all of their capabilities immediately while other measures are put into place.  National Guardsmen have to report one weekend a month and commit to 2 weeks out of the year for drilling and briefing purposes.  Instead of reporting to a military installation, these soldiers can be deployed to the border to enforce federal law and protect the country they swore to protect upon enlisting into the armed forces.

Our Federal government has failed through Democrat and Republican administartions to protect our borders.Don’t they know about the war in Mexico? Do they care so little about its citizens and risk the violence spilling over in big waves not trickles as is happening now?
We need to restore order on our borders and elect people willing to enforce the existing immigration laws. And perhaps we do need immigration reform and borrow a bit from Mexico’s laws and enact them.
The time for half measures is through. We will lose our country if we cannnot control our border.

  2. AZ should sue the federal Gov for being MIA on defending the border and shrugging it’s responsiblity for national security. Keep the pressure where it belongs. The feds should be held accountable and everyone needs to know that the Obama Admin is neglecting this!

    Great Job, Mr. Polo.
I am voting for you in all the elections already
and this bolsters my confidence in you.
These individual states already won statehood and deserve the full support of the Federal government to help insure thier protection.
If no Federal support is afforded by statehood then shouldnt States enact thier own laws or succeed from the Union? Its only going to get worse and spread throughout the country from Arizona as the illegals
    migrate from Arizona, and/or come in illegally to other states instead. We are promoting you on Sodahead.com {Me and other Floridians}

Please leave my last name off my last letter to
Mr. Marco Rubio. I also misspelled his last name and wish to correct that please.

FLORIDA [AND THE REST OF "AMERICA"] NEED TO GET ON BOARD. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. SOUTH FLORIDA, FORGET ABOUT IT, YOU CANNOT EVEN RECOGNIZE IT IS PART OF AMERICA. WE WANT OUT COUNTRY BACK AND I SUPPORT STRONGLY DEFENDING OUR BORDERS, AND WHILE WE ARE AT IT I SAY ANYONE WHO SUPPORT ISLAM OVER CHRISTIANITY (UNDER WHICH THIS NATION WAS ESTABLISHED) NEEDS TO GO!

  6. Carol Muttillo

It is long past time when we should have inforced the laws we already have but do not use. :-(

I say three cheers for Arizona’s Governor and yes,
it’s time to do it here and all other states as well.

California is broke. Much of the reason has to do with paying for those who do not belong here.

I’m tired of pressing 1 for English! It IS ‘our”
language here in the United States.

Let those who wish to become citizens do so the legal way, and all others go back where they came from.

I wholeheartedly agree with your commentary.

Unfortunately, Florida has proven to be one of, if not the, most spineless state in the country on the issue of immigration.

Notice the illegal alien hiring halls that city commissioners have voted in favor of and opened with relative ease.

Notice the immediate and forceful condemnation of the AZ law by Diaz-Balart. Is there a bigger panderer in Congress??

Note the carefully crafted statement from Rubio where he tries to appease EVERYONE and offend NO ONE by bringing attention to a little bit of this and a little bit of that, ie, the Federal Government has failed but at the same time we’re worried about profiling, etc.

Furthermore, Mr. Rubio sounds naive when he states that he’s a little concerned about “profiling” because in the past we’ve seen where “Governments are given an inch and they take a mile” – yes Marco, the FEDERAL Government, NOT the state Governments. In this case the FEDERAL Government was given an inch the last time they passed amnesty (1986) and, well, what do you know, now THEY’VE taken a mile by allowing the problem to grow ten-fold from what it was in ’86.

They also promised that NAFTA would solve this problem and, surprise, surprise, that hasn’t worked out so well either…

What Florida needs is one person to STAND UP and tell the illegals that they are not welcomed and not needed.

We need someone to DEFEND American citizens with as much vigor and rigor that they condemn the supposed downfalls of the AZ law.

We need someone to tell Obama and Congress that we will not sit idly by while they PURPOSELY try to ferment a race war (I know, Hispanic is an ethnicity) and/or continue to play the game of divide and conquer.

And if doing all of those things means that someone is offended, then so be it. He who works the hardest toward solving this problem will get my vote regardless of whether they offend, and as of now, I see no takers…

Those “rich socialists” like Soros, Michael Moore and the Ford Foundation are doing everything to make immigrants — legal and illegal — believe that white America hates them. They are so evil in the way they stir the pot and finance these rallies across our beloved land.

I am the son of a Chinese immigrant to America.

If the federal government was serious about growing the gross domestic product, they would increase the qouta of Asians who can immgrate to this country. Asians normally bring capital and proven entrepreuerial spirit.

Just look at Canada. Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto are boiling over with jobs and economic growth because they let in so many “legal” Asian immigrants.

Meanwhile, Michigan and New York, both of which border Canada, have double-digit unemployment, and their state governments are going seriously broke.

  9. Rosalie Knowles

Florida is known as a state that harbors illigal’s. I declare that the Federal Government has forgotten the meaning of this word. Criminal, lawbreaker, breaking and entering, etc. the list is long.

What I’m tired of is that these people get everything free; i.e. medicine, school, medicaid, SSI, foodstamps, help finding jobs. They have babies and are handed everything they need. They can loider, march on our government making demands that should be priviledged for Citizens only.

Yes ALL illegal’s need to be sent back to their respective countries and all their children must be declared illegal and sent back with them. And since harboring illegals is illegal, the state, city, person must be punished according to law.

    WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

  10. Florida Native

You’re right Matthew. They’re going broke in spite of the fact that they have just about the highest taxes in the civilized world.

That’s why they have unemployment also – why would anyone invest capital in an area where taxes are so high and they have to deal with all of that entrenched unionized labor?

Another thing about those states up north – they have more lenient balanced budget mandates in their state constitution than any other states . That is another reason why they’re going broke – they run deficits forever but they can’t raise taxes anymore because everyone is tapped out.

Simply put, the failure of BOTH Democrats and Republicans has been abysmal on illegal immigration enforcement. I fully support LEGAL immigration to this nation as we were built by immigrants seeking the American Dream of Liberty, prosperity, and real hope for the future of our children.

Arizona’s response was nothing short of what the Federal governments CONSTITUTIONAL responsibility calls for- enforce the laws we currently have. To trust another “immigration reform” without demonstration of being able to enforce the existing laws is short of lunacy. The real reform that is needed is in changing the faces of our Congress and bringing leadership to the existing laws. Either Congress forces this Administration to do so, or there will be more and more States standing up for the people of that State.

Start with supporting and electing REAL Conservative Constitutional candidates. I am one and want nothing less than the Federal government to do as they are supposed to do- enforce the law BEFORE you start talking about “reforms” that will include an amnesty program.

Without law and order, there is anarchy.

The Constitution gives the Federal Government the responsibility to protect our borders. Impeach, recall or vote out people who will not or cannot enforce this Constitutional responsibility.

In the meantime, States such as Arizona, must take the mantle of responsibility to protect its citizens.

It is a privilege to be a citizen of the United States. People from around the world want to emmigrate here. Immigration laws must be applied equitably and fairly to all who wish to emmigrate to the United States. Immigration must be controlled in an orderly fashion, and according to law. Among the things all prospective immigrants must understand
    are:
    1. Come here legally, respect and abide by our laws;
    2. Learn English, to properly assimilate into our culture, and to promote your successful economic contribution to our society and to yourself.

  13. I’m a tea partier libertarian. We need to use caution about the whole immigration nonesense.

Keeping them out is the first step to keeping citizens IN.

Flow of labor and capital are essential parts of a free market. If you believe in freedom, you should be against this move.

It is unconstitutional to erect a wall and say who can or cannot enter our country.

  14. Tea Party Jim

I agree — we need an Az. Style bill in Florida. In fact, as I recall, several were proposed when Mr. Rubio was in office, and none came to the floor. My dad was in one of the groups who came to meet with you on this issue only to be turned away. Thank you, Mr. Rubio for that! Now you say you want to be tough on illegal immigration, and it was the committee’s fault the bills were not brought up? I don’t think I quite trust you on this issue.

By the way, dad lives in a Sanctuary City in South Florida. We also need a bill that will outlaw such designations, and remove any mayor from office who makes such a designation. Illegals have over-run his neighborhood, and nothing is being done about it.

As to profiling — which group is responsible for the most border crossings in Florida and the South? Do we not profile when an APB goes out for a bank robbery? If that announcement stated bearded, fifty-ish overweight white males, I would expect to be stopped. Same here. But the law states “only if in the act of being stopped for another purpose”. Sort of like Florida’s seat belt law (until recently). So I see no problem here.

  15. Florida Native

donttreadonme, if there is one position that has prevented me from wholeheartedly accepting the libertarian point of view it’s their stance on immigration.

The fact of the matter is that slave labor distorts the labor market.

The other fact of the matter is that we have nowhere near a free market and neither does any other country in our general vicinity. There are literally thousands of regulations that would have to be eliminated or watered down before we would have any semblance of a free market. There are also thousands of different incentives, subsidies, and barriers given out or put up by Govt that distort the market that would have to be done away with also.

Furthermore, much of what we are getting in the way of illegals are people that are coming here simply for the entitlements. It can’t be the jobs alone because Mexico’s unemployment rate is half that of the US. These people are getting paid a pittance and, truth be told, they wouldn’t be able to support themselves on what they make were it not for the freebies. Take away the freebies and watch them go home…it’s not quite the free labor market that you think it is.

Also, there is a large criminal element in drug smugglers coming over. Sealing the border isn’t only about keeping labor out.

  16. It is called the 4th Amendment, and it protects people, place, papers and effects. It does not specify that illegals are not bound by it, and it is absolutely ridiculous to do a poll on a website that is going to follow whatever you say in an article. This is America, home of people who can no longer think for themselves. Sad

  17. Barkley Henderson

Florida should follow Arizona with the passage of a similar immigration bill. The Federal Gov’t has decided not to protect American citizens, so we must do it ourselves. Please don’t back down ! ! !

  18. Florida Native

Anonymous, it’s a stretch to think that the 4th amendment protects people, especially people in the country illegally, from having the police ask for identification papers after they are stopped for another violation or for reasonable suspicion of something else. Good luck trying to sell that one…

  19. carole clancy

when people came to USA years ago, they wanted to prosper and also have the country prosper. they came legally, spoke english, and worked hard! noone expected a free ride or everyone to bow to their ways. they wanted to better themselves. get some of that goden road.

  20. TeaPartJim makes an excellant point…I want a difinative statement that Marco Rubio does not support amnesty and LaRaza as his endorser Mel Martinez and will pass stiff immigration anti-Illegal invasions and all incentives removed and E-Verify for all Bus. as well as Public Facilities eg. schools etc. I watched a Youtube video that got accidently erased where Mel made promises to LaRaza at a meeting well cheered to pass amnesty. Lets demand accountability and commitments before we get more of the same….more Rhinos. All the rest sounds great, but if we get Cap & Trade and Amnesty we’re done.

  21. I also would like to say yes and definately yes I support Az. SB1070 (I believe it was). I lived there for 12 yrs. what a shame our Federal laws are disregarded and we have to take control. What do we need a Federal Gov. if not to protect us. Pass a similar here now! I watched the invaders climb the fence right in broad daylight in New Mexico,(I believe) as we gassed up on our travelto Fl. It’s a joke!!!, but a sad one.
