VIDEOS:GOP Debate: Wasserman-Schultz, Taxes, and Herpes on the Menu
The highly anticipated debate between Republican candidates Donna Milo, Karen Harrington and Robert Lowry in Florida’s 20th Congressional
District was held in front of a couple of hundred supporters and interested voters that showed up to see the candidates debate for the first time. Credit goes to the two GOP clubs – the Davie Cooper City GOP and the Southwest Broward GOP Organization who sponsored the event and need to be acknowledged for the high level of organization, preparation and professionalism they displayed in putting this event together.
The room had supporters from all three of the campaigns that participated in the debate. Fortunately, fears of unruliness that were rumored in the run up to the debate were disproven and the event was held without any incident. The debate kicked off as the candidates introduced themselves and stated their reasons for running for Congress.
***CANDIDATE VIDEO RESPONSES ***
The first question asked of the candidates was that of party loyalty and commitment. Karen Harrington took a not so subtle jab at Robert Lowry when she told him that ”I didn’t have a political rebirth, or an epiphany.” This response was prompted by Lowry stating at speaking engagements that he wasn’t always a Republican.
Lowry’s website documents his ‘epiphany’- “A student of sociology in my early college experience, I was a committed liberal (as many students typically are) attending rallies and marching on Washington D.C. That was until travels to East Berlin, Prague, and other parts of Europe, opened my eyes to the dangers of socialism, causing me to take another look at my political commitments. I made a dramatic change to conservatism, and never looked back.”This salvo was the first of several by Harrington, including the reference in her closing remarks that she has raised more money than any other candidate in the race. This was obviously aimed at Lowry, since the Lowry Campaign has reported only $158 cash on hand this past reporting cycle, and yet they have oftentimes claimed ‘frontrunner’ status, since he has been in the race for 14 months now. The Shark Tank first reported this in a previous article, (Read more Harrington Qualifies in FL-20 Congressional Race)
However, these mild criticisms could be the calm before the storm as rumors and speculation about Robert Lowry’s credibility and character could come into question in the very near future.
Rounding out the debate, each of the three candidates were asked the same questions, and each gave a fairly similar answer to each of them. The Shark Tank was there to video the whole debate, but because of time constraints, we will not be posting the entire debate, only its highlights.
At the end of the debate, it was clear that the candidate that outshined the field was Donna Milo. Milo was articulate, well-versed on the issues, and spoke with the utmost confidence and passion when answering the questions. Karen Harrington did very well, also showing great confidence and passion, but seemed a bit nervous and stumbled a bit on a couple of the questions. Robert Lowry displayed his knowledge of some important issues and his likability, as he tried to engage the room with friendly banter. I think Lowry finished a close third to Harrington because of the fact that many felt Lowry conducted himself unseriously during the debate, as he used tiresome sarcasm and jokes in almost all of his answers, not to mention the fact that he made a couple of off color remarks that some might consider inappropriate for a Congressional debate.
Robert Lowry- taxes like Herpes
Harrington on AZ illegal immigration law
Donna Milo on Government spending
Robert Lowry on Energy Independence

How does Lowry know so much about “HERPES?”
I was present for the debate and was not surprised on how good Karen did but was pleasantly surprised on how good donna milo did. I was shocked and offended by robert lowery cockiness, insulting way of answering the questions and especially offended at the herpes comment. I contracted herpes through an unfaithful spouse and to hear him joke about it as a condition made me sick. He should drop out of the race its no wonder he cant raise money..
ROBERT LOWRY IS A SHAMEFUL PERSON WHO NEEDS TO GET OVER HIMSELF AND DROP OUT SO A GOOD CANDIDATE CAN WIN.
Well that debate changed alot for me. I am a ex DC works memeber and DC works only supported lowry so I was finally glad to see the other canadidates finally. I went with an open mind and was not for or against any of them but lowry he really was the worst of the 3. Every time he answered a question it turned into a boring history lesson trying to show how smart he is but with no solutions of his own to offer or an attempt at a joke that wasnt funny (Herpes is like taxes goes up there with his joke of cutting food to dementia patients to cut cost at his nursing home because they wont remember or his joke about being a sr citizen is like putting vaseline all over your glasses tying your feet and hands together and wearing oversized shoes is what its like to be older. If lowry fianlly wants to be funny maybe he should have his Liberace campaign manager write his name on a target and shoot his own initials and take ownership of it finally vs blaming it on Dennis Lamb like a coward.
Milo was a great surpise and karen was very good!
How very disappointing to read this review. Can Lowry have been that insensitive and flippant? I’ve heard him several times and have never observed any of this strange attitude or approach to the serious campaign topics. Could the reporter be biased? Just wondering…
@J.J
The reporter(me) is not biased. We report you decide, videos do not lie.
Donna Milo and Karen Harrington were serious and effective, judging from the videos. They both came across very well.
Lowry is a joke, judging from the videos – how do you put someone like that up against Wasserman-Schultz? You can’t unless you just want to write off District 20.
Obviously the poople on this page either came in already against Lowry, or they are Democrats who are don’t like him because he is a good candidate. Robert was the ONLY one that actually offered solutions to issues like reducing the deficit. The other two simply offered old rhetoric. The crowd was overwhelmingly cheering more from Lowry than for the other two. Harrington was reading off of cue cards on her rostrum instead of actually knowing what she wanted to say, and Milo gave only the most vague answers to direct policy questions.
This is SUCH a biased report…. Though I’m not surprised. It’s simply the state of modern “journalism”. (I use that term very loosely)
@Michael S
Videos do not lie. I will be posting other videos in the weeks to come regarding this debate. Take off the blinders.
I was at the debate as well and I have to concur with Javier. His opinion sounds biased but he is right on the money. Lowry did not come across well.
Glad that Donna Milo did well.
Republicans have proved that passing tax cuts is fairly easy with a majority; likewise, Democrats have proven that spending increases are fairly easy to achieve. But neither party has the will to cut spending and eliminate entire programs on a consistent basis. There is no political will to do so.
Future congressional majorities, whatever party, must begin to not just reduce the rate of spending, but to eliminate entire programs.
Wonder where Milio would cut?
GO DONNA MILO
I would like to thank the Republican Clubs that sponsored the debate. The debate by all measures was well prepared and professional.
It should be noted that the crowd was enthusiastic and well mannered, with 200 people in a room that wasn’t large enough for that many people. It should serve as a shot across the bow for the DWS camp and democrats in general- were coming for you.
Concerning the winner of this debate, I believe Mrs. Harrington did very well and was the only candidate to ask for my vote or support. Donna Milo was articulate and spoke with authority in answering the questions, but she struck me as a Republican Joe Lieberman in her delivery and connection to the voter.Mr. Lowry’s conduct was unbecoming and ill-suited for this event. His use of off-color remarks makes him unfit to serve as my representative in the 20th district.
I would like to see Mrs. Harrington carry herself with a little more swagger and greater authority in defining the problems facing us as a district and offering a solution to those problems.
It really doesn’t matter who the nominee will be. None of them can beat Wasserman-Schultz.
I wonder if I was at a different debate. Despite some weak attempts at humor, Lowry was the overwhelming winner. Karen was 2nd and Milo was a distant 3rd. One has to wonder as to the objectivity of the blogger in picking the candidate that obviously came in last as the winner. Lowry’s knowledge of history and and having some hard numbers and facts, as opposed to the other’s vague generalities was readily apparent. There was no contest. I just realized, Javier, are you the same Javier he took a shot at for not printing his op-ed or something till 6 weeks later????? could you put that video segment up please?? Thank you
Sure, Karen has raised more money. She probably has a “tip” jar by the register at her restaurants. I was totally unimpressed with her when I had an opportunity to speak with her.
As for a bias against Robert Lowry, the very first minute of the first video, in addition to the reporter’s written statements, prove a bias – without question.
Javier is a political pundit wannabe – a hack, really. It’s your credibility on the line, Jav. Get a real job, bud.
I was at the debate as well.
I arrived with zero preconceived notions on any candidate…actually, I knew that there was a transgendered candidate participating, so I expected, or maybe suspected, that Donna Milo’s sexuality would in some undefined way, define her politics.
Having said that, and this having been the first event of this sort that I had ever attended, I can say that I walked into that room with no dog in the fight.
I was not impressed by Mr. Lowry. After listening to him for just a few moments, I found myself distracted by his general demeanor; there is a time and a place for everything, and while I did not find his herpes remark particularly offensive (or funny for that matter), I did think that it was not a smart thing to do, as it would give the opposition something to target. You are there as a candidate to attract those whose support you haven’t secured, and (as we have read above) giving any reason, be it real or imagined, to be criticized, labeled less than serious, or being insensitive, is not the best way to win friends and influence people.
Yes, Mr. Lowry had some prepared talking points, but my waiting for him to do that thing with the index fingers and thumbs that we normally attribute to Used Car Sales Professionals detracted from them.
Mr. Lowry should have decide on what he wants to do when he grows up…politics, or stand-up comedy.
Karen Harrington was sharp, articulate, and serious. As I listened to her speak, I couldn’t help but think that she somehow felt entitled to the nomination, so I have to assume that I was receiving a message that she was transmitting. She’s lived here for a long time, she has always been a Republican, and her family has been in business for 30+ years in the area.
Great…but where were the original ideas?
Her responses seemed to consist mostly of repeating, or “fleshing out” the problems that we all know exist, but I heard nothing that I had not read elsewhere prior to walking into the room last night.
Donna Milo…
I am an individual who is seldom caught unawares, or surprised. I like to think of myself as being well-versed in the issues that we, as a nation, face.
Every instance where I found myself making mental notes of a response, so that I could look further into it after the debate, was provided by Donna Milo.
The best, and most practical, response to the energy question was provided by Donna Milo. The simplicity of drilling near-shore to better handle the inevitable accidents while developing better deep drilling equipment was a REAL, easily implementable solution, not a position or demagoguery.
Her response to the question about immigration was dead on, and her absolute conviction that Judeo-Christianity denotes more than a shared religious heritage, but a common future, one where we will stand together, or fall alone.
Donna Milo was refreshing, passionate, informed, and without a doubt, she set herself up as the most dangerous candidate in the race. If Donna Milo continues down the path she set for herself last night, she will force the other candidates to get their games on, or get out of her way. She will cross all kinds of bridges, and bring all kinds of people to her message.
She brought me to her message last night, and I am on her bandwagon.
I have to also thank her for humbling me.
I am an arrogant cuss, cursed with the belief that I know it all, and that there is nothing that anyone can teach me.
Last night, Donna Milo taught me what courage borne of unyielding convictions can do. That was a brave, bold thing to do, what Donna Milo did last night. To stand there, in a room filled with the members of a Party that (more often than not) are not kind to people like her, exposed and willing to stand or fall on her political beliefs because that is what her conscience is telling her that she must do, required more valor than I possess.
Then, I was taught a second lesson by the very people I believed the least likely to do so.
I stood in that room and watched people who in the prime of their lives had never heard the word transgender, flocked to Donna Milo to shake her hand, and express their admiration for her performance last night.
I stood there, and was reminded of the greatness of the people of this country, of their vast reserves of goodness, and of their innate sense of fairness. In that reminder, I found myself daring to hope that this country could once again be that shining beacon upon a hill as described by a tall man with an unforgettable twinkle in his eyes, to two young Cubans who once stood outside a Miami restaurant just to be near him.
This is the one and only time I will speak of Donna Milo’s sexuality, I owe her, no, not her, I owe all of us that, I owe her message the attention it merits, so, as long as Donna Milo is delivering her message, I will be doing whatever I can to make certain that her message is heard.
Well done Donna…well done.
You make us all proud.
Robert Lowry is an Ed Lynch clone, and look at how good he did last month in the 19ths special election.
Don(na) Milo might have a command of the rhetoric, but has everyone here forgotten that (s)he’s a man in a dress? What chance does (s)he have against DWS?
Harrington is strong, and getting stronger every day. It will take a woman candidate to beat Debbie in November, and Karen can do it. Get behind her.
Shame on you! How about giving them all
credit just for stepping up to the plate. One debate
and your so quick to trash.
@Jim Videos do not lie.You are entitled to your own opinion on who won. Milo was by far the better candidate. Harrington and Lowry did about the same, except for the fact that Lowry did not take the debate so seriously. Herpes? Really, come on.
I am the first to say that Lowry has a great understanding for history, so he should know that stupid statements like the few he made, have historically ended candidacies.
What op-ed are you talking about? I think you have me confused with Anthony Man of the Sun-Sentinel. Still, no one is obligated to do anything for anyone.
You make my case, again. Calling out media for not doing something one wants, makes ‘ONE’ sound like you are whining and is childish, let alone dumb because media has proven to sink campaigns and careers.
More footage of the debate will be coming out shortly. We will keep you posted.
Javier, your quote saying I sound childish and dumb:
“makes you sound like you are whining and is childish, let alone dumb because media has proven to sink campaigns and careers.”
Why do you have to resort to name calling? Why can’t you respectfully disagree? It seem the left always has to resort to name calling. How sad.
I ask all to read my post, and decide for themselves.
[...] VIDEOS:GOP Debate: Wasserman-Schultz, Taxes and Herpes on the menu … [...]
Unfortunately, I do not live in District 20 (I’m in 17, right next door to 20) so I can’t vote in this election. I am watching this closely, however, because DWS MUST be voted out in November! I was not able to attend the debate, but based on Javier’s words and some of the comments, permit me to make a few observations.
First of all, the fact that someone used to be a Democrat should have absolutely no bearing on their legitimacy as a conservative candidate today. I was raised by uber-liberal New York Jews, and I was not exposed to conservative views until my early 20s when I started thinking for myself. Once I “saw the light” if you will, I switched parties and never looked back. Despite my Democrat beginnings, you won’t find a stronger Republican than me. If Lowry was once a liberal or a Democrat, I would certainly not hold that against him.
Until I read this article, I had no idea who Donna Milo was, or her history. I firmly believe that one’s sexuality is genetic and not a choice. Someone who was born with the “right” sexual identity can’t possibly understand the emotional turmoil of someone who is not comfortable in his or her own skin. I would never presume to know how that feels. Ms. Milo’s “sexual identity” is and should be none of our business. The fact that Ms. Milo used to be a man is about as important as the fact that Mr. Lowry used to be a Democrat. Neither should even be an issue in this race.
It is my understanding that the core principles of the Republican party are smaller government, less taxes and more personal freedom. Unfortunately, most people forget the “more personal freedom” part during a campaign. I care much more about what a candidate genuinely believes today than what they used to believe. I am living proof that people can change their political viewpoints as they grow up and their circle widens. What Ms. Milo and Mr. Lowry believed or did in the past has no bearing on who they are today.
The only criticism I can glean from the comments here about Ms. Harrington is that she is a restaurant owner. I was under the impression that Republicans are all for capitalism, so I fail to see why owning a business should be held against a candidate. I would think this would be a plus. I guess I’m missing something here, too. Please enlighten me.
As I said, I unfortunately cannot vote in this election. However, I do think this gives me a better opportunity to step back and more objectively observe the candidates. It appears to me (although I could be wrong) that for whatever reason Javier has taken a dislike to Robert Lowry. This is not the first time he has tried to discredit him. I’m sure he has his personal reasons, and this is his column, so he is free to express his opinions. If Javier were a newspaper reporter and not a commentator-slash-columnist, I would expect more objectivity. But this is a blog, and not a newspaper article, and Javier is letting his readers know where he stands. On that note, we all know how “objective” so-called newspaper reporters are anyway, (which is not at all), so it truly is the responsibility of the voter to research the facts and vote intelligently.
The more I learn about politics and get involved in campaigns, the more I see how dirty a business this is. The closer the race, the nastier it gets. I’m sure I don’t have to tell any of you astute readers what I’m talking about. We see this constantly. Regardless of what columnists write, and regardless of what readers post in their comments, everyone has an opinion, and most everyone has an agenda. My only agenda is to get Debbie Wasserman-Schutz fired no matter what!
I have already pledged my support to Robert Lowry, and I am nothing if not loyal. I like him personally and I believe he is a true conservative. What I know about Ms. Milo and Ms. Harrington I learned today by reading this column, and I cannot say anything negative about either of them. From my limited perspective, both seem like strong, conservative candidates as well. Of course, since I cannot vote for any one of them, it matters little what I think. I only hope that the voters in District 20 will elect someone who can successfully defeat DWS in the general election. This should be the number one goal. If ever there was a time for Republicans to get together and stand behind a candidate with 100% support and commitment, it is NOW!
Watching Mr.Lowry debate was just comical! I didn’t know if I was watching a Republican debate or a comic routine? This man is going to make us Republicans look bad. The Democrats are going to use all of Lowry’s sound bites against us.
@Stephanie
When did I ever attack Robert? I have never attacked him. I point out what needs to be pointed out. If Milo or Harrington would have acted the way Robert did, or have said the things that he said, I would be just as critical.
Again, the videos speak for themeselves. I will be posting more videos this week to paint an even clearer picture of what I am referring to,and what is so obvious.
I am not behind any one candidate, however I am concerned that soundbites like these will hurt the Party and other candidates as a whole.
@Stephanie…watch the video segment where Mr. Lowry addresses energy, and please tell me where he stated what his solution would be.
I know where Canada and Mexico are located, geographically speaking, and I know that the EPA has restrictions on drilling. I also know how to Google, so I can easily find out how much oil we import, and from where.
What he never stated was what he would do to make us energy independent.
Stating the problem does not a solution make.
I WATCHED ALL 3 CANDIDATES AND WATCHED 3 PEOPLE LIKE THEY WERE CAMPAIGNING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT GOVT. ITS A SHAME REILLY WAS NOT UP THERE I SAW HIM SPEAK AT A REPUBLICANS WOMEN CLUB AND HE WAS THE STAR WE LET GET AWAY! HE HAD ALL THE MOMENTUM AND ALL THE ENDORSEMENTS. AND WAS SMART ENOUGH TO NOW THAT ALL THESE PEOPLE ON THE BALLOT MADE A JOKE OF THE BALLOT AND NO CHANCE RAISING THE RIGHT MONEY TO BEAT WASSERMAN. THIS IS NOW JUST A CONTEST OF PEOPLE WHO CANT RAISE MONEY OR WIN.
WHAT A GREAT REPUBLICAN BALLOT WE HAVE A TRANSGENDER I GUY WHO SPEAKS LIKE HE IS ON A BAD SOAP OPERA AND A WOMEN IN HARRINGTON THAT STILL NEEDS A FEW YEARS TO RIPEN.
LETS ALL FORGET ABOUT 20 AND FOCUS ON COL WEST!
All Lowry has is Ed Lynch supporters. What a joke. Can anyone say “DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN!”
Having been in the room, I’d have to say the comments here are steeped in preconcluded acrimoney and smack of graft.
The Host Blogger is surely a sheep in a wolf’s clothing. How much do the Democratics pay this site to promote the defeat of the GOP. While run by a professed ULTRA conservative, could he do any more good for DWS? He seems bent on making sure the weakest possible candidate faces the incumbant How much are you services like this worth Sharkie?
Here is the question of the day ladies and gentlemen. WHO exactly is this blogger host Javier Manjerres and why on earth should anyone respect him as honest and trustworthy in his opinions and presentastions? In the coming weeks there will be a full examination of this RINO Manjarres and expose his craft. Hang on, it is going to be a fun watching the shart fin soup boil.

@Silence Dogood.
I am guessing that, unlike myself and Mr. Menjerres, the name you post under is not your real name, so that gives me reason to wonder about your motives.
I am a pretty astute guy, I was present at the debate, and I have not found a basis to accuse Mr. Manjerres of displaying any measure of bias in this report.
Making accusations is easy, substantiating them is far more difficult. Perhaps you, or anyone else on the thread accusing Mr. Menjerres of engaging in biased reporting in this article, can quote the specific instances of his having done such a thing.
I look forward to your response.
Wow amazing so much venom from the lowry camp toward Reilly if they are still slandering him.. I supprted him and know his business and they do very fine and some are about to go public. And as far as the ny afl CIO well wrong Reilly go watch the video on you tube it’s a differnt guy… Good research team lowry.
imagine a broward GOP without lowry, leggit, Chad Lincoln and dc works we might actually win a race vs being laughed at,,,,
team lowry just can’t stop going negative why are they afraid if other good candidates?
Reilly Milo and harrington all became friends why can’t lowry get along with other candidates… I guess now we know why he couldn’t hold a job for years as it says on his website..
I cannot wait to face off with anyone of these three dopes. Mr. Lowry is such an idiot-he thinks I forgot about his actions at the gun range with all of those teabaggers?
Lowry and his gay Campaign manager Legg-erace wrote my initials on the target and shot at it. This would make them liars because they said they did not know who scribbled my inittials in the first place.
Hey Lowry, how is Jim Beam doing now adays? Or are you closer friends with with Mr. Daniels?
All of you Repukicans are gonna lose to me. You all better make sure Harrington wins, because she would be able to at least hold some ground with me. Lowry and his “Lynch Mob”, are done.
Just look at the vedeos on this dumb article and you will see how stupid Lowry is.
Maybe that Tranny can give you some pointers about how to carry yourself before she gets fed up with you and smacks you down. But wait, Legg-erace my actually enjoy a smack down from her.
Hmmm, videos don’t lie” but editing can paint any picture you want to.
Not saying you did anything other than objectively “report” what you saw by way of the assembled clips, but therin lies the problem – it’s what YOU saw.
Solution to the cries of “BIAS”? Compress and post the entire uncut, unedited version and let the viewer see and decide based on the whole story, not on selected/editied comments, responses or answers.
Wasn’t there, don’t personally know the candidates nor do I live in CD20. However, I would like to see the debate in its entirety to analyze and decide for myself about each candidate’s performance relative to the questions asked, the context in which the responses were given, the specificity of said responses, etc.
That’s a crtical step in being able to offer my support – identifying my “candidate” of choice through a study of the COMPLETE set of facts, not a subset chosen for me by someone else.
While I appreciate the informative intentions of the blog post and attendant video clips, there is such a thing as creating more problems than you solve with any given action (i.e., the law of unintended consequences). What has frustrated most conservatives is that liberals want the country to focus on their intentions when acting – not the consequences or results of those actions. Let’s not fall into the same MO by taking shortcuts that lead to division or can be construed as biasing.
The lame-street media has used sound bites, editing and clips to further their own agenda for so long that the public has turned to alternate media outlets such as this blog spot to gain a more balanced and truthful accounting of events, people, issues and so on.
Please, let’s not inadvertently (giving the benfit of the doubt here that this wasn’t intentional) fall into the same shoddy or deceitful practices of using technology to obfuscate. We’ve got to hold the conservative ideal to the highest standards – even when inconvenient or expensive to do so – if the average voter is to once again perceive that there really is a difference between the 2 parties/ideologies.
@negrocon
Each question and answer session lasted between 9-18 minutes! So there is no way to be able to post the debate in its entirety. Also, all of the answers given by the three candidates were 3 minutes long-the questions alone were just as long. Hahaha
The answers given by the three were long and drawn out.The clips cut were the highlights of their responses to those particular questions, regardless if some of them were longer than others.
This is interesting..
How many different political parties has lowry been a member of.
How many wives has he had?
How many jobs couldnt he hold?
Seems to be a trend here…..
Because I attended the debate, I was stunned to see reviews suggesting that Lowry had made sexual comments.
It finally dawned on me that some people may think herpes is only a sexually transmitted virus. Thus, I guess I should mention that anyone who’s had a cold sore has a herpes virus which remains forever in the body.
The debate was fascinating. Donna spoke well and describing solid conservative positions, but most responses were a little too general for my taste.
Karen presented a string of Republican talking points in a gratingly high pitch. Her closing seemed mean spirited–not what one would expect of a potential statesman.
Lowry’s responses, on the other hand, were detailed and interesting. They sprinkled with humor which, despite other comments here, was well received as evidenced by laughter and applause.
Yep writing bad checks defintely qualifies someone for congress. Reilly would have fit right in with the current crowd in Washington.

I attended the debate and Milo, was the weakest of the three candidates with Harrington coming in second.
I attended the debate for the purpose of deciding who to vote for. I listened carefully and took careful notes on their positions. Robert Lowry was the clear winner. I have no issue with the other candidates and will actively campaign for the winner of the upcoming August primary. But make no mistake, Lowry is the most qualified of the three candidates.
