Is Charlie Crist a potential VP Pick…for Obama?

January 1, 2011

by Javier Manjarres

In spite of assertions made to the contrary by Vice President Joe Biden, speculation continues to swirl around the possibility that President Obama will replace Biden on the 2012 Presidential ticket for someone with less of a propensity for gaffes as well as for a younger and more ‘moderate’ candidate in order to appeal to the thousands of disenfranchised ‘Independents’ across the country.  If Obama really is intent on throwing Biden under the bus, I would not be surprised if he chooses none other than the tanned and ‘Independent’ one himself, Charlie Crist.  Many will no doubt think that this would be an unlikely move by Obama, especially after Crist was trounced by Senator-elect Marco Rubio in this past November’s general election. Others seem to think that Crist will run as an Independent, or maybe even a Democrat in one of the upcoming Congressional races, but I think that’s unlikely.

Let’s analyze this potentially savvy move by the President.

Charlie Crist, once a very popular sitting Governor, finishes the year with a remarkable 50% approval rating-even after losing to Rubio by 19 points. Crist finished with 30% of the vote, while Democrat Kendrick Meek finished 3rd with 20%. This numbers are very telling when you consider that if Crist ran as a Democrat, and not just a Democrat-lite candidate, he would have garnered, at least 10-15% more of the vote and made it a fairly close election.  Whether he’s a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, Governor Crist is still very popular amongst Floridians and he would be able to deliver a potential Obama-Crist ticket a considerable amount of Independent votes and perhaps some of his GOP loyalists’ votes.

Another point to consider is that Obama has fallen out of favor with many conservative-leaning Democrats, so with Crist on the ticket, it would be a brilliant head fake by President Obama as coming across as being somewhat bipartisian in picking the ‘Independent’ Crist. We should also take into consideration that Governor Crist has been in lock-step with Obama’s agenda back to January of 2009. Remember the notorious hug where Crist literally embraced Obama and his failed Stimulus Plan?  How about when Crist stated that he would have voted for Obamacare?

Governor Crist has already stated that he would have left the GOP regardless of his lagging poll numbers early last year, and he publicly stated his true feelings towards Republicans on the following Shark Tank video which circulated across the country:

Another point that is worth considering is that Governor Crist received substantial support from Democrat leaders and activists throughout Florida, as well as more than a few ‘tingle up my leg’ TV pundits. The charismatic Crist is still an impeccably polished and relentless politico who is always in “campaign mode”, and he’s demonstrated that he is always looking to advance his career by climbing the political rungs.  While a Congressional run is probably out of the picture, if the opportunity to be the next Vice President of the United States were presented to him, he would immediately seize it.  It is impossible to overstate Charlie Crist’s ambition, ego, and his political appeal; and President Obama may not have any other choice but stroke that ego if he wants to regain lost popularity and win another term in office.

This has got to be one of the most idiotic stories I have read so far this year.

Crist is like yesterday’s newspaper, worthless and discarded. He will never hold public office at any level again.

    not even dogcatcher.

It’s a fine thing for the Oompa-Loompa community to have Mr. Orange even considered for high office with Emperor Arugula!

Who wrote this story, Charlie Crist?

If not, it was one of his flacks. Crist has to realize he is dead with Republicans and has no future in the Democratic party. Which means has no future in politics.

Democrats did help fund him in the latter stages of the Florida election in a vain attempt to keep Rubio from winning. But even desperate Democrats don’t trust him because he is a say anything, spineless politician.

I don’t know how he he will afford his metrosexual hairdos, manicures and foo foo. Maybe he will get lucky and get a maitre’d position at some Miami restaurant. That’s about as far as he can get.

Where did you get your information on Crist? From Chris Matthews? Crist constantly sticks his foot in his mouth twisting to satisfy whomever he thinks happens to be listening at the moment; he made a mess of the Florida economy; he has never had a consistent position and is overwhelmingly despised by the Florida electorate. The people who voted for him were the hardcore obamamaniacs who knew Meek could not win. Crist makes peoples skin crawl and making him the VP candidate may very well be the nail in the coffin for Barry so, please, go ahead and do it. I’m constantly amazed at how political writers have no idea what is going on.

Obama will not be on the ballot for a second term, because too many states will demand a long form birth certificate of all candidates from now on.

  16. MM says:

Sure, why not go full hypocrite? I don’t know how you could turn anyone’s stomach worse then having Crist on the ticket. And hell, if he turns it down, maybe Murkowski will take the slot.

This is nonsense. Biden gaffes are about as important as Mickey Mantle’s strikeouts: overall he is doing a fine job. The only way Obama would replace him would be if he could find an *extremely* attractive VP candidate who would help him in 2012 and be a stronger bet for 2016. Not a weak ex-Republican.

  21. [...] The Shark Tank asks the question, Is Charlie Crist a potential VP Pick…for Obama? To answer their question … NO!!! Why would Obama take on a turncoat Republican who has no idea if he is an Independent, Democrator RINO? Actually, Crist will be whatever makes it possible for him to retain some sort of government power. Believe it or not, in today’s political environment, one actually has to stand for something. As a Democrat is the only way that Charlie Cgrist could even consider running again – in Florida, particularly, and elsewhere. Your early logic is probably pretty sound but time has a way of changing the landscape. If I were Obama, I would dump “blubbering Joe” too. Maybe he should pick Barney Frank!

You’re a fool. Crist is hated by so many people there are too many to list — Republicans and conservatives who see him as a traitor, blacks who hate him for trying to railroad Kendrick Meek out of the Senate race, Cuban-Americans who hate him for patronizing Rubio’s Cuban heritage on the campaign trail, Orthodox Jews (and many non-Orthodox as well) who hate him for cynically executing Martin Grossman in the middle of Crist’s political campaign for a 26 year old case in which Grossman’s guilt was highly questionable, progressives and liberals who hate Crist for mucking up the election as a self-serving spoiler who arrogantly split the Democratic vote and elected Rubio, gay voters who hate him for his cynical attempts to stir up gay-baiting legislation while a Republican, only to suddenly become ‘gay-friendly’ when running as an Independent, Christian voters who hate him for being less than upfront about his own gay trysts which have been well-documented in the media, environmentalists who hate him for his corporate giveaway of Everglades land to his lobbyist-political contributor cronies, and the majority of none-of-the-above who see him as a lying political opportunist and empty-suit hypocrite who lost thousands of Florida jobs while powdering his face in the mirror while plotting his future political career, and as a corrupt pocket-lining enabler of Jim Greer’s criminality. Regardless of one’s opinion of Obama, most of us can agree he is hardly stupid, and there is no way he would burden his re-election prospects with a has-been loser like Charlie Crist. As for Crist’s so-caled 50% rating, it’s nothing more than some passing farewell sentimentality for a do-nothing governor kicked out the door by the voters of Florida. When the voters of Florida had a chance 2 months ago to weigh in on Charlie Crist, they rejected him soundly. But if you’re still not convinced, the how about this? There is a pretty decent chance Crist will be INDICTED for his role in the Greer debacle. How do you think an indicted running mate would look in 2012? Would Obama like to cast himself as the ‘unindicted co-conspirator? Kind of has a catchy ring to it, don’cha think? Can felons vote so Crist can vote for himself? Obama will RUN from Charlie Crist faster than Florida jobs while Crist was governor. Get real and smell the coffee.

  35. Lee says:

Christ may as well move to another country! He will say anything; if he feels it will get him a vote. He’s an arrogant idiot and not to be trusted. He made a mess here in Florida and people have finally seen his true colors.

Humorous that The President pressed for more rail service: Amtrak promised to add a third roundtrip train from Washington to Newport News on the Virginia Peninsula. A week ago, the Daily Press reported that there was $29 million in unspent interstate highway funds that were intended to build an on- and off-ramp to Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. – Tenis
