Senator Marco Rubio took some time out of his August vacation to lend his support to the 2nd annual Dolphin Cycling Challenge at SunLife Stadium, a fundraising event that benefits the University of Miami/Sylvester Cancer Center. The event featured a number of retired Dolphin players, and Rubio was looking very comfortable in the Dolphins jersey he wore at the event- Rubio is a huge Dolphin fan with a wonk-like memory of the team’s players, victories, and defeats. Rubio played football in his youth and aspired to play in the NFL, but since he “lacked both size and speed”, a gig in the NFL was more of a pipe dream than a serious career alternative for our freshman senator. These days, Rubio’s football exploits include showcasing his ‘golden arm’ at home when he hurls pillows at the TV whenever the Fins fumble the ball
But what he lacks in physical ability he more than makes up for with his enthusiasm- will the Dolphins win more than 5 games this year, Senator? :)
In all seriousness, the fight against Cancer is something Rubio can relate to, as he lost his father to the disease last year and also has a nephew who has recently contracted cancer.
After the event, Rubio fielded several questions, including ones that asked about Ron Paul’s recent statements about Cuba as well the current University of Miami football/Nevin Shapiro scandal that has cast a dark cloud over the school and its football program.
