The Grinch Who Stole Redistricting

December 22, 2011

By Javier Manjarres

The Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC) continues to be the gift that keeps on giving- to the Democratic Party. The BREC has recently put out a ‘Call to Action’ to rally support for Congressman Allen West, as West’s congressional seat could be in jeopardy if the boundaries from the newly proposed redistricting maps become finalized.

An email with the subject line “Save Congressman West” was sent out  by BREC Vice Chairwoman Colleen Stolberg, and she asked BREC members to man the phones and email the Republican legislators involved in the redistricting process, including Governor Rick Scott, urging them to redraw the maps.

After working so hard to get Congressman West elected, we cannot stand idly by and let the Democrats win in 2012. As this proposed district map stands it’s likely that Broward will not have any Republican Congressional representation in Congress.-Colleen Stolberg

This statement is farcical on its face. Why?  Well, Stolberg states that “we cannot stand idly by and let the Democrats win in 2012,” but that is exactly what she, BREC Chairman Richard DeNapoli and the rest of the committee did when it came down to submitting redistricting maps to the Florida Legislature.

The Democrat Executive Committee (DEC) submitted seven maps to the redistricting committee for review while the BREC failed to submit a single map. During the last redistricting meeting in Broward County, the DEC was fully represented at the meeting, but the BREC dropped the ball and failed to even send one committeeman to represent the Republican interest. The reason for this is quite simple- the local GOP was too busy that same night promoting the Romney for President campaign kick-off.

To make matters worse, the only Broward County Commission seat that is currently being held by a Republican- Chip LaMarca- has been redrawn with boundaries favoring  the Democrats.

Chairman DeNapoli was under the assumption that his ‘following’ would take his ‘Call to Action’ to heart and help out in the mapping process. It’s pretty obvious that his ‘call’ fell on deaf ears- either that or the support of his leadership does not exist.  DeNapoli supposedly was waiting  for ‘guidance’ in order to proceed with ‘rallying the troops,’ but guidance from whom was he waiting for?  One would expect that the head of the Republican Party of Broward County would be the one displaying true leadership and would be on the forefront of “issuing guidance” to his constituents, but it appears that what we’ve got is more of the same ineffectual leadership that DeNapoli is known for.

To add salt on the Broward GOP’s redistricting wound, BREC Treasurer Mark McCarthy pointed the finger at others for this lapse in judgment, saying that it isn’t the committee’s responsibility to act on behalf of any Republican elected official.  According to McCarthy, the BREC lacks the talent, skill, and qualifications to submit any redistricting map, yet the Democrat Party of  Broward was able to get at least two individuals to draw up the seven maps on their behalf.

What is also disturbing about the BREC’s complete ineptitude in this matter is that it may actually be a designed plan by DeNapoli to subvert the reelection of Commissioner Chip LaMarca.  Last election night, DeNapoli himself was overheard stating, “Chip’s gonna get crushed in redistricting and will not get re-elected.”  This, coming from the same “leader” who once stated that Allen West could not win in his current congressional district because he was “black” and that Senator Marco Rubio could not win 40% of the Republican primary  vote against former Governor Charlie Crist.  Let’s also not forget that DeNapoli arrogantly believed that he would win overwhelmingly the Chairman’s election, yet he won by a mere 4 votes on a second ballot.

The Shark Tank was cc’d on the following email that excoriates Stolberg for dismissing other candidates running for Congress in Broward County.  Where was the ‘Call to Action’ to try to  influence maps in congressional district 20?  After all, we all know who represents the Floridians in that district- Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz-

“As this proposed district map stands it’s likely that Broward will not have any Republican Congressional representation in Congress.”  Isn’t this defeatist talk like this counterproductive?  Doesn’t it minimize the efforts of Karen Harrington, Joe Kaufman, Anna Trujillo, Ozzie DeFaria and all others who put themselves into the public eye as members of the Republican Party and are currently running for the opportunity to become Republican members of the United States Congress?

It is important that we maintain the seat of Congressman West but for you to make the statement as you did above shows the lack of faith you have for any of the candidates that are currently running. You owe them all an apology and I believe that with your statement you should step down from your position in BREC. – MA (anonymous emailer)

Chalk up another holocaust for Broward Republicans. I’ve seen the proposed maps by the senate and the house and they look like they were drawn by Debbie Schultz herself. Still all gerrymandered and favoring liberals. WTF!!!!!!

Is it true BREC sent no representatives to the redistricting meeting or submitted no proposed maps? Instead you all attended a campaign kick off for Romney? Is this true? I hope you leadership people in BREC are reading this, do you have sh!t for brains? Yea that’s right it said it. You should be embarrassed and removed from power. You guys are bush league and total incomps! Let’s hear the other side. Tell us where Manjarres is wrong. Explain yourselves and don’t be cowards. This is an anonymous message board so let’s hear your explanations. Sounds like to me Broward Republicans need new leadership and I’ve defended you people in the past. This makes me almost want to cry, just shameful.

What in the hell is wrong with the BREC. If we are ever going to turn this country around we are are going to need more people like West not less.

  3. Rich says:

You know folks, the districts are NOT supposed to be gerrymandered to favor any particular candidates. Unfortunately they are.
Why are you folks so afraid of having a fair election?
Why must the districts be drawn to favor anyone?
When your arguments and ideas are weak is when politicians resort to trying to rig elections.

  4. Tony says:

You gotta be kidding me. BREC was out at a Romney gig?

This ideological war will be won or lost at the most fundamental level: local elections.

BREC’s disconnection and incompetence could be no more obvious.

  5. Tony says:

    @ Rich: OK, fair enough.

Stop with the meandering district lines and go ahead and lay down a square grid.

  6. By this time next year, the people of Broward County can have thrown the current BREC officers out. You don’t have to put up with this group.

I challenge everyone reading this to put themselves on the ballot for precinct committeeman in next year’s primary. Are you up to the challenge?

See The Power Is There for the Taking

There are hundreds of vacant precinct committeeman positions in Broward. You can even get appointed in advance of the primary, although appointees don’t have a vote on the executive committee.

In Florida, every precinct has at least two committeemen, one male and one female, so it’s really easy to effect local change.

What exactly does Broward level redistricting which is voted on locally by a democratic county commission have to do with congressional level redistricting which is controlled by the Florida GOP dominated legislature? More six degrees of separation illogic here I see. This is yet another smear piece against the Broward GOP by Manjarres the democrats best friend.

    • ahhhhh, did we strike a nerve at the BREC? Truth hurts, BREC did not lift a finger for either West or LaMarca, useless idiots.

      • RBN Member says:

Just calling you out on your BS. You know I used to like reading your site but it’s totally devolved into a smear site. Once again this only benefits democrats by you printing a bunch of bs.

        • Hey, no one is telling you to continue reading the blog. The problem you have is that you can’t help yourself but to read and comment.

You may love me, or you may hate me, but you will always read me-fact. Happy readings and thank you for commenting. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that all of you clowns can’t resist reading The Shark Tank

          Merry Xmas!

    • The Boyz says:

Didn’t Richard DeNapoli have an affair with a local male Judge? Stay tuned folks…

  8. RBN Member says:

Even more nonsensical are your comments about DiNapoli. So he’s part of the save Allen west movement but he according to you said west couldn’t win. Give us a break. DiNapoli has been involved in the party for years and Broward is the only ones sticking up for allen west now. You contradict yourself with what you write. This is a typical smear piece by you Javier. Epic fail.

    • Yup, that is exactly what DeNapoli said about West, on numerous occasions. So Palm Beach doesn’t support or ‘stick up’ for Allen West, really? The truth hurts, a lot of knives coming out on DeNapoli, keep your distance

      • RBN Member says:

Javier you’ve been attacking DiNapoli for years now and have no credibility when it comes to anything going on in Brec. Brec has become the largest rec in the state and attracts more people at its meetings then ever before. We don’t believe anything u write on Brec. Stick with national stuff and quit the smears.

        • zzzzzzzzzzzzz, DeNapoli is toast, and he knows it, wait til you see what is around the corner….ahahaha, priceless!

        • Rose, former BREC member says:

BREC is a joke! All it’s become is a social club. Most of the people do nothing and talk bad about others if you happen to disagree with them. This is one of the main Reasons I & others are no longer members anymore.

Because of their partying and laziness I hope that this does not hurt Allen West.

        • Liz K says:

I for one believe Javier. And the more you attack him – the more I believe him.

  9. Fred says:

OMG! How could this happen? BREC is the worst REC in Florida!

  10. BREC Member says:

Javier – you have been naughty this year ! ROTFLMAO after reading your last comment – I know exactly what you are talking about. It will be quite something when you uncover this one….Thanks for all the good work you do for us conservatives ! Merry Christmas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Chadwick says:

Maybe DeNapoli is trying to draw attention away from the rumor that he and the openly homosexual Bob Wolfe are having an affair?

    • Sandi Trusso says:

People who spread rumors to destroy the reputations of others, are cowards. Where’s the proof. I don’t even know these people, but I’m completely turned off to whatever opinions you hold, because you don’t have anything substantive, only mean and unproved! Who started the rumors? Some coward!

  12. Shelly Berber says:

You people have some real problems down there in Broward. I was on a conference call months back and your Chair DeNipoli was scolded by former Chairman bitner for being out of line and disrespectful. Wow!!!

  13. 2nd Amendment Guy says:

Look at how Broward Republican Executive Committee Chairman Richard DeNapoli is holding that firearm in the picture.

He is such a phoney! Finger on the trigger is a No-No Richard.

Broward Republicans need to oust this FAKE 32 year-old little girl.

He was put in place by the Broward County elites in order to control the party.

Let me not get started on the rest of the children that are running BREC. No wonder so many of us refuse to get into this organization.

  14. mascmen7 says:

I drew the 2000 US House Seats districts which revealed 2 black districts. A black democrat rep asked for my work which he submitted and was adopted. I used to work at BREC headquarters until Ed Pozzuoli was elected chairman who promptly locked all volunteers out and put up a glass partition such as bank tellers are behind. When I volunteered to help one day on the other side of the glass partition, the new office manager failed to accept me as help while Ed Kennedy laughed. We had helped him and his wife run for office but he was very ungrateful. GOP has a long way to go and presently is on a suicide watch as they drive Hispanics out of the Republican Party. Maybe younger people will change the current mindset which is atrocious.

  15. Gerrie says:

BREC – AWOL on redistricting. And that silly “call to arms sent out by that joke of a Vice-Chair is just laughable. Did BREC forget we have only ONE Republican in the COunty Commission – they sure forgot to help him!

  16. Nurul says:

Funny thing is that the more Manjarres attempts to dstbaeilize the BREC, the stronger DeNapoli becomes. DeNapoli seems to thrive during times of opposition. I mean, when he ran for BREC Chair he was attacked constantly by Manjarres and his goons for more than a month. All DeNapoli did was smile and keep on message. BREC members have seen through Manjarres’s game and they just get more behind DeNapoli every time Manjarres pulls a stunt. DeNapoli is battle-tested and has never been caught off guard, and the meetings have consistently grown in attendance and excitement. Looking forward to Allen West next month! Go DeNapoli!
