Obama’s Keystone Pipeline Problem Ready to Blow

By Javier Manjarres

Time is running out for President Obama to decide whether or not to approve the proposed  Keystone Pipeline project.  The Keystone Pipeline would surely create American jobs and likely take the edge off gas prices that are being pressured by the increasing tensions in the Middle East and Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz.  Obama is in a bit of a pickle in this latest act of presidential procrastination, as two of his key constituencies- Big Labor and the Environmentalist Lobby- are at each others’ throats over the proposed pipeline.

Market analysts say Iran’s threat to blockade the route has already increased U.S. gas prices by 30 cents. If the trend continues amplifying pain at the pump, you can be assured that we’ll be hearing a barrage of energy rhetoric in stump speeches heading into the November election. In fact, rising energy costs may be all it takes to establish the proposed Keystone XL pipeline as one of the central issues in this year’s presidential campaign. -Keystone XL

Congressman Steve Southerland supports the construction of the 1700 mile pipeline, and he is joined by a growing majority in Congress who believe that time is running out fast, as Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has indicated his willingness to sell the tarsands oil in Canada to China and other Asian countries.

  1. He doesn’t explain that the Keystone Pipeline is designed to transport sand oil to an EXPORT location Port Author, TX. and would not effect U.S. Gas prices. The Refineries would have to be rebuilt for sands Oil since the are currently made for sweet cude, yet the State of South Dakota has set aside 3,000 acres for Sands Oil Refineries and Illinois also has refinery capacity that would cost 1/10th as much. I see this as more Public Debt for the Private Profits of the politically connected corporations (Crony Capitalism)at the expense of the American people. Today, the Alaskan pipe line and Alaskan Oil is being shipped to Asia and does not effect nor used as gasoline or oil products in the United States, even though it was touted for American use only, when the tax payers paid for it. I see that it is amazing how they conveniently leave out details for profit.

  2. NO public funds are involved in the building of Keystone or were the Alaska Pipeline – Dan you are wrong on the facts.

  3. The US refineries have for the past 8 years been upgrading their facilities to refine the Canadian Sands. Whiting, IN and Toledo for one. We need the pipeline! Why would we want NA resources being shipped overseas to China? ENOUGH!

  4. We need something that will work for our citizens to get back to work and bring down the price of our gasoline-if we have States willing to open land for these projects, then let’s use them, employ our people and keep the oil here. Frankly, I’m tired of a President who can’t or won’t make up his mind and simply increases the problems we have here in these, still, Great United States. Aren’t we tired of the politicians who speak out of both sides of their mouths to us and do what they find best for themselves?

  5. I cannot understand why there is so much controversy over the Keystone pipeline and additional oil and gas exploration in this continent! We are the stupidest country in the world to allow other radical countries to control our destiny when we can truly be free and independent again. We need to be energy self-dependent again. We can protect the Environment far better than any other nation in the world. If properly done, we can export some of our own resources to reduce our trade deficit and to reduce our energy costs at home. Wake up America from your drug induced stupidity and do the right thing for our country.

  6. If Obozo thinks his support numbers are low now, just see what happens when he cancels this pipeline! They must have a LOT of dirty tricks up their sleeves if they think they can get this dirt bag re-elected! The only people left supporting him will be the pure left Socialists and the black community (if they bother to show up!).

I guess we can pray that Canada holds out until after the election, when we have Conservatives in control who will get this thing moving.

  7. Dan, it seems to be that your fact checking is lax. I believe, correct me if I am wrong, that the Alaska pipeline was funded by a consortium of oil cos.who formed a pipeline company. While some federal and state tax concessions may be in place for the project, it is the pipeline co that bears responsibility for any environmental infringements.
I agree that Alaskan oil is shipped to Asia. More succinctly to South Korea, Japan and even some going to North Korea occasionally to “keep them quiet”.
As for your assertion of “more public debt..”, who is asking the taxpayers to fund this? I believe they want EPA and Commerce Dept. clearance ,. Just get outa’ the way!

  8. The Canadians want a Strong United States. Most Americans want a Strong Canada. Obama wants neither.

  9. It is blown! The word is that Obama rejected it due to the pipeline route. I guess he wanted it to run to Mars then on to the Gulf Coast.
Think about this, instead of a pipeline being built to Canada’s west coast to directly supply ships going to China, if it came down to the Gulf, our refineries could process fuel we could sell to China.
We already EXPORT processed fuel, it has become one of our substantial exports, while we all pay through the nose.
If we could sell to China, we could offset the ongoing debt to that country.
But, of course, Obama being as inept as he is, plus a staff of idiots, no one could figure that out. And, THEY ARE the smartest people alive, aren’t they?:):)
    They must be voted OUT!

  10. How does a Media Matters Troll make the first comment. Dan, the Alaska pipeline was all private money, some federal loan garantees, but unused. The route of this proposed pipeline is opposed by George Soros backed eco-nuts, funded by the Tides-Foundations. The route can be negociated state by state, but it will be a profit making venture, unlike the so-called ‘Green’ industries that are going bankrupt like Solyndra.

  11. Here’s the REAL reason Obowmao nixed the pipeline – corruption, plain and simple.

Some days the only thing that keeps me from climbing a clock tower is the knowledge that Obowmao will spend eternity getting buggered by satan himself, just like his dearly departed supporter, Teddy Kennedy.

  12. This administration is talented at making friends with the American People. This pipeline, the slow dismantling of NASA, the treatment of our U.S. Marines and servicemen, the federal lawsuits against state governments, and other infamous deeds against America. Maybe Americans need to feel a little pain to institute a change in Washington. The cancellation of the pipeline is a minor set-back, America is spring-loaded to boom in the future. America needs the correct leadership in Washington, and this period of history will soon be an unpleasant memory.

  14. Those damn Republicans are blocking president Obama from fixing the economy every chance they get!

    • Those “damn Republicans” as you put bit, are all for business and definitely fixing the economy.

What you fail to see is that Obama gave the illusion to the rabid environmentalists that he’s interested ONLY in “green” energy sources. Now, they expect him to deliver on his promises and he will do so anyway because he wants to “break” private enterprise unless it’s “crony capitalism.” (Read up on “crony capitalism.”)

As a result, and because he’s running for reelection and needs those rabid environmentalists votes,HE will sacrifice the economy to satisfy that constituency. I hope you’re getting this, because that shoots down your knee-jerk reaction about Republican intentions.

Let us hope you understand now.

    • Do nothing Senate and Obama. All he does is take million dollar vacations, have WH parties at taxpayers expense, play golf & campaign. No doubt he needs another four years to continue his good time and let Soros run the government and media. How stupid are Americans?

  15. How does our refining oil to sell to China result in lower gas prices for the people of the U.S.A.?

Job growth: Some temporary construction jobs, then some oil refinery jobs in Texas.

The risk: Enbridge (the pipeline company) was responsible for 80 pipeline leaks in 2010. One of them was a leak of more than 800,000 gallons into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River. The Keystone Pipeline would run through the Ogallala Aquifer, a 174,000 square mile aquifer that provides 20% of the water to irrigated farmland in America. Polluting this aquifer would be a major blow to our nation’s food supply.

So, yeah…let’s not rush into this project, which mainly benefits the profits of Texas oil companies, without the proper environmental studies. Congress forced the issue, demanding a quick decision, so Obama made the right, quick decision: No.

  16. This would be pure foolishmess on the part of Barack Obama if he failed to allow Keystone to commence! It might be wise for the President to do some historical research. He would learn what happened to Jimmy Carter after he placed the needs of “fringe” environmentalists over the needs of unions! Obama takes the union vote for granted. Bad idea! He would not be interested in sharing President Carter’s fate in the upcoming general election!

  17. Keystone, a no brainer and 100k jobs, idiot to delay!!

Get us off this sinking ship, 2002 warnings to congress came true:
