who knows…semantics often change the picture….tax increases are okay if called “revenue enhancers”….conservatives accept same-sex marriage if it is call a “civil union”, and “not marriage”….military build-up is not threatening if called “Peace through strength”…right-wing GOPers are not extremist if called “Progressive Conservative”, ala Jack Kemp…or “Compassionate Conservative”, ala George W. Bush….Big Government programs are not socialism if called “investments” :)

I don’t like the term illegal immigrants either, but for different reasons. First off, immigrant implies that someone is attempting a legal entry into a sovereign nation. So that term is out! Let’s call them illegal aliens, because they are illegal…and they are aliens, i.e, foreigners entering a sovereign nation. Pizz on the hispanices who don’t like the term, they can take their tacos back to the border and ride their burro doing it. You have a nation, you’re not political exiles in fear of your life. You want a better life? So do about 300,000,000 Chinese…so why don’t we just let them paddle their Junks over this way and enter the ports of California? Or why not let some 200,000,000 Indians come over here because they want out of their caste systems? I don’t think we should care MORE for the Mexicans than the Chinese or the Indians, we need to provide affirmative action for them. I hope you bean-counters are aware of what’s going to happen when we turn into a 3rd world nation. It’s going to be hell to pay.

  2. Conservatives have allowed the Left to set the tone. Thus, when a Conservative says, “illegal immigrant” the Left answers, “racist!”. Granted, the largest group of illegal immigrants in this country come from Mexico but those of us who oppose illegal immigration are just as opposed to people who come here illegally from Ireland as we are those who come from Mexico. We need to do a better job of framing the issue in the terms of national security. It is simply a matter of knowing who is crossing our border, how long they plan on staying, and knowing why they are here.

Citizenship is a priviledge that can’t be earned by breaking the law and it is deeply unfair for us to treat those who have broken our laws in the same manner as those who have come here and followed all the rules.

    While we are sooo concerned about Feeeelings;

I would like to say I’m also offended by ILLEGAL ILLEGAL ALIEN LAWBREAKERS and CRIMINALS who BREAK and ENTER the USA ILLEGALLY.

    • Rich says:

I’m as liberal as they come but I am smart enough to know that illegal aliens must go, all of them as soon as possible.
Only problem is that the Democrats want the Latino vote and the republicans do their corporate master’s bidding and protect them to provide cheap labor.
      What are we to do?

    • Jacqueline L says:

So,we could you call bank robbers Unlawful Withdrawers or burglers Unwelcome Intruders. They are what they are people who broke the laws of the country and continue to do so every day they are here.
Ironic these criminals are “offended” by being called what they are under our laws.

I know a man here legally from Haiti and his mother has been trying legally to come and visit from Haiti to see her son. She is unable to come here because her original VISA has expired and the process is an absolute nightmare for a 77 year old lady. Yet, we have ILLEGALS pouring into this country every day and they don’t want to be labeled “illegal” and want to come here unfettered to milk off of our system. Yet, an elderly lady wants to come LEGALLY and visit her son (who has always worked and is also going to college here – paying for it mostly himself with a small grant)and she is unable to do so because our immigration policies are so strict. So strict for whom??? Certainly not the illegals! I am tempted to tell her to go to Mexico and walk on over with the other illegals but I know she would never think of such a thing………..How pathetic is this??? I know another story of a hard working man who was getting his citizenship (less than 2 years to go) when his sponsor (family member) decided to not sponsor him anymore for personal reasons. He worked hard for me for many years and now he’s considered illegal; therefore he can no longer work. His company spent thousands of dollars on lawyers and nobody could do nothing! The moral of this story: Migrate (or visit) to America legally and your life will be h#ll so just come over illegally with no problem! This country continues to reward/welcome bad behavior!!

Our immigration laws are currently one of the most liberal in the world. I will bet you that the country of origin of most of this country’s illegal aliens have FAR MORE stricter immigration laws than our country. I would suggest that if these “illegals” really want to make a real difference that they fight for more open immigration policies in the countries they left .

We can all well remember brother Gov. Jeb during the heated 2006 “amnesty” fight informing us how hurtful the utterance “Illegal Alien” was to his wife. So much so it brought her to tears at its very sound. Untill that day I was totally unaware of her status.

Orwell was correct regarding the use of language by rulers. Comrade Stalin was also one who enjoyed fine tuning language so as to shape minds and thoughts, or instill fear.

I am able to recall when at about the same time every year the TV would air PSAs with a loud voice stating “Aliens Report” by such a date to whatever ins was then. But, that was when we were a Nation of laws, Laws which were enforced to the letter. We also were a power to be reckoned with too, not a nation in decline.

  7. Rodney T Rigby says:

The Card above “Resident Alien” card is the current ID card for non citizens that have come here legally. Which is supposed to carried at all times. Don’t be politically correct. Just another term we can’t say, Illegal Alien, Terrorist, radical islamist. Just say it like it is.

  8. Susan Benton says:

Is Jeb Bush’s wife an illegal? If she is I am disgusted. If not, I’m still disgusted because she is acting like a silly teen-ager girl who is “offended” by an accurate use of the English language.

Among the things this country really, really needs is adults (and teen-agers) who can use the English language correctly and unemotionally.

  9. I prefer “Illegal Alien”, particularly when reviewing your definitions above. Although “alien” possesses a sci-fi flavor, it best describes persons who are illegally present–that is, not possessing bona fides necessary to be resident. (Besides, most of the sci-fi aliens are NOT welcoming, are beings to be turned away.)

PS: “foreign nationals” is a cop-out. Persons may not be “nationalized” ANYWHERE. “Foreign” is fuzzy, ambiguous. I may be a legal resident, but my persona is “foreign” to the community in which I reside.

  10. Dagny says:

Illegal aliens are illegal folks that do not obey our immigration laws. Why should anyone be concerned how this is defined? Really, things are going from stupid to stupider. This is all part of the cultural marxism that is dumbing down our society. If we called them permanent visitors no one would understand what is meant, nor what is at stake. If being called illegal immigrant is offensive, then go back home. This is similar to high school kids yelling U.S.A. and being accused of racism. When push comes to shove, and they are shoving – make no mistake about this – then it is time to really start pushsing back.

  11. Desi Sanchez says:

Ok, which part of “I-legal Alien” is not understood?
The card is shown, is very clear “Resident Alien” this means that she is legal. Simple right?

  12. Perla says:

Can someone please tell me why it’s necessary to have a separate news station for “Latinos”? What’s the reason for Fox News Latino????? Is anyone else offended by this?

Good article and great point Mr. Manjarres

  13. Jacqueline L says:

I use Illegal Alien or Criminal Aliens myself. Illegal Immigrant is almost to polite a word for these law breakers! It does not mention any particular ethnic group. SO, if they ARE here legally why should they find the term offensive.
Forget the term Political Correctness it is a term for those afraid to call a spade a spade!

  14. RLPartridge says:

I challenge you all to open your copy (or anyone’s copy) of the United States Constitution. Look in Article I, Section 8 (powers of Congress)for the power granted to Congress to regulate immigration. It is not to be found. In fact the only mention of immigration is found in Section 9. which provides that a “Tax or duty may be imposed – not exceeding ten dollars for each person.” Amendment X reserves such power to the States, respectively, or to the people.”

In historical practice, US immigration laws have been tools of racism for Asians, Irish, and others. Those who bad-mouth Latino immigrants are ignorant and selfish. (“Pull up the ladder boys, I’m aboard.”)

I was stationed in the Navy in South Texas and Southern California in the 50s and 60s when our southern border was relatively open. People were allowed to pretty much come and go. There was virtually no “illegal immigrant” problem. People could come over, work, and go home. Now they have to risk their life and/or pay a “coyote” to bring them over, they bring their family and they’re not about to go home.

The drug war is another US government creation like booze prohibition, and it too is unconstitutional.
