Nancy Pelosi’s Factless Obamacare “Facts”

July 25, 2012

By Javier Manjarres

During the recent Republican-led repeal of Obamacare in the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrat Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took the floor to regurgitated the same ol’ Democrat Party talking points that are aimed at demonizing Republicans for opposing the ‘tax’ that is Obamacare.

Speaker Pelosi didn’t sound too convincing, and as you can see in the video, she obviously did not rehearse her performance prior to giving the presentation.

Pelosi focused on the pre-existing condition clause in the law and accused Republicans of completely opposing the clause.  In reality, most Americans, including both Democrats and Republicans would like to see that pre-existing conditions are accepted by health insurance companies.

No longer will it being a woman be a pre-existing medical condition, but Republicans want to take away those protections for women and all Americans.      -Nancy Pelosi, Democrat Minority Leader

What Pelosi is really saying is that the free drive-thru taxpayer funded abortions that liberal Democrats were hoping for under Obamacare will be torpedoed if the law is repealed.

No, that’s not fair. Her statement refers to the fact that, starting in 2014, insurers will no longer be able to charge women higher premiums for health coverage than men (assuming they’re in the same age bracket. It’s hard not to see the current practice as gender discrimination, and it’s severely penalized countless women and families, regardless of their views on abortion. Your distaste for an individual political figure appears to have caused you to unfairly rush to an inaccurate conclusion here. Thanks.

The health insurance market is highly competitive, and if companies generally charge women more than men, it is because women, on average, cost more. That is, indeed, discrmination by sex, but it is perfectly rational discrimination…just as charging higher premiums for fat people, older people, or smokers is rational. In other words, the premium reflects the actual risk presented to the insurer, and does not differ for arbitrary reasons, and certainly not due to a preference for men over women.
It also happens to be true that women pay less, on average, for life insurance than men because women tend to live longer. And since most insurance companies offer both life and health insurance, it is the same insurers charging women less and more (respectively) than men. That flies in the face of any charge of sexist intent.

Florida – life ain’t fair. With respect to your whining about insurance companies charging more for women’s individual health policies costing more, steve is exactly correct. Rates for individual policies are based on the actual claims experience of a very large group of women in the same age group and risk factors. That is why it is insurance. It works just like auto insurance. If you have a lot of speeding tickets you pay more than the person who has none. If you had a DWI you pay more than those who don’t. It is a fact that more women than men in the age group of 20-50 will have babies. There is a cost associated with having those babies. More women than men in this group will have such things as breast cancer. Now, when you get above that age group, these same policies begin to cost more for men than they do for women.

While removing the pre-existing condition exclusion is nice, it will cause rates and prices for everyone to increase. Just like being able to keep your kids on a policy until age 26 will also increase the cost. These types of things will not enable more people to obtain insurance. It will lead to fewer being able to afford coverage. Insurance companies have claims activity on millions of people. That is how they determine the cost. They will just adjust their rates to reflect the added costs. Liberals need to look at the results of their actions. Not their intentions. Intentions always end up with poor results and higher costs than they ever tell us.

No, you are wrong as the law is. Insurance is a business. A business that the progressive want to ignore. There is no right to insurance. Women pay more because they have more medical issues than men and live longer. it is a simple fact of gender, one that the progressives would like to forget. Men and Women are not equal, regardless of what MS Pelosi or Obama say!

    • Rayne says:

Car insurance is cheaper for women than it is for men because women (on average) get fewer speeding tickets and have fewer accidents than men…Do you complain about the “discrimination” your car insurance company practices, or do you happily accept the lower rate?…These things are based on common sense and logic, this is why liberals can’t understand it, and since they are predisposed to cry victimization, they automatically assume that someone is just being unfair or mean to them…No different than 5 year-olds who don’t understand why ice-cream costs more than broccoli…It must just be because they like ice-cream more, and the mean people don’t want them to have it…

    • Jay says:

I don’t see you complaining when women get lower life insurance rates because they live longer. Or lower auto rate because they use to drive safer. just health care

Hi Debbie – I am an unfortunate constituent of yours in Cooper City. I would like to show you my tax returns of the last 3 years showing my business revenues going down every year and the fact is that last year had it not been for odd jobs and 2nd jobs I wouldn’t have even made a living, despite my MBA and my small business that does not earn in excess of $250,000 anymore so I cannot pay you the millionaires tax you are demanding. In fact I even have a government paid road in front of it but it is still failing. In the interests of transparency if I show you my tax returns like you are demanding of Mitt Romney, will you show me yours?

  6. Robert L Oakley says:

If this health care tax is so great, you and Humble Harry should be at the front of the politicians line with President Obama to set an example by taking part in your great plan. Your union buddies, I’m sure will be right behind you!!!
    May God help America!!!
