Today is a sad day for conservatives across America, as Republican Senator Jim DeMint (SC) is stepping down from the Senate in January to head the Heritage Foundation. DeMint is considered by many as being a ‘King-maker’ in the Senate, after backing several key conservative senators like Mike Lee of Utah and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who many believe is the future of the Republican Party.
Sen. DeMint’s departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint’s replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina.-WSJ
In 2010, DeMint broke ranks with his Senate colleagues and openly endorsed then Senate candidate Marco Rubio over the squishy Republican turned Independent, and possible future Democrat,Charlie Crist.
Rubio’s campaign was serious trouble when DeMint decided to get involved in the race, but quickly gained much needed name recognition and grassroots supports nationwide from DeMint’s vast ‘Tea Party’ support. For those of us who were ‘on the ground’ throughout Rubio’s election run, believe me when I tell you that DeMint’s endorsement was a turning point in his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.
Earlier this year, Senator DeMint sat down with me to discuss a possible 2012 or 2016 Rubio Presidential run. DeMint stated that he would rather see Rubio run for President as opposed to being a VP pick, insisting that it “wouldn’t really be a good job for someone like Rubio.”-DeMint Interview
“Jim has been a source of inspiration for many of us who came to Washington to fight for our core conservative beliefs. He has shown that getting things done doesn’t have to mean abandoning your principles. For too long, he was a movement unto himself in the Senate, keeping the torch lit for free-market principles and limited government. We are a better country for his service. Jim is a friend and mentor, and I plan to honor his time in the Senate by continuing the push for individual liberty and restoring constitutional government.”-U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT)
Expect a video from Senator Marco Rubio to come out shortly addressing DeMint’s departure from the U.S. Senate.
