Israel 2012 head shot 1At a recent round table meeting on January 15th assembled by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, some of South Florida’s police chiefs, mayors, and other dignitaries assessed possible ways to help “curb rising gun violence.”

While gun violence in schools is certainly a topic that needed to be addressed, one law enforcement official went as far as to side with the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre in calling for armed resource officers in schools.  Newly elected Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, a former Republican turned Democrat whose 2012 candidacy was supported by Congreswoman Wasserman Schultz said that “all options needed to be on the table’” when dealing with the issue of school gun violence, including arming police officers already assigned to schools.  Most, if not all Broward County schools are already armed or are assigning more throughout the school district.

Shortly after the Newton, Connecticut shooting, LaPierre famously called for Congress  “to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school in this nation.”-(Source-Washington Post)

“Mental health issues, gun registration, Baker Acting, having school resource officers armed, there are just so many different issues and I think everybody understands there’s no one solution to this problem.” – Broward Sheriff Scott Israel

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendant Alberto Carvalho added the sombering personal note that he has himself “buried 44 children who have died violent deaths in Miami, all of them on the streets of Miami, not in schools.”

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz posted ABC’s affiliate WPLG Local TV’s coverage of the meeting on her website.

Thank’s for posting this Javier! I like to see that (D) Sheriff Scott Israel knows what he is talking about. As a Republican,I can see myself voting for this guy in the future…

Why not employ the rich resources of our vast retired military who may wish to return to some kind of civilian work?
