A meteorite exploded over central Russia yesterday injuring over 500 people, but could this incident have additional implications for national security and for the use of drones over U.S. territory? Local Russian media reports are circulating that the meteor was shot down by Russia’s missile defense system. Whether these reports are true or not hasn’t been confirmed, but could a future meteor hurtling towards the continental United States provide convenient cover for President Obama and other governments to veil the targeting of potential national threats or criminals?
Speculation is running rampant among conspiracy theorists all over the interwebs, but considering the backlash the Obama administration has received over their targeting of Americans overseas for being potential threats to national security, is this scenario a feasible one?
A Russian health official says nearly 1,000 people have sought help for injuries caused by a meteor that exploded in the sky, blasting out countless windows.
Chelyabinsk health chief Marina Moskvicheva, said Friday that 985 people in her city had asked for medical assistance. The Interfax news agency quoted her as saying 43 were hospitalized.
The Russian Academy of Sciences said the meteor – estimated to be about 10 tons – entered the Earth’s atmosphere going at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph). It shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, releasing several kilotons of energy above the Ural Mountains.
The European Space Agency said it was not related to the asteroid currently slated to buzz by earth about 17,000 miles away.
There are also rumors that the meteor was intercepted by rockets, but that is unconfirmed.-The Blaze
Just to reiterate, we are engaging in some speculation here, nothing more. There have been numerous documented meteor strikes to the continental United States. The Department of Defense has already used lasers to bring down intercontential missiles- couldn’t the DoD use these incoming meteors as target practice for the country’s existing defenses or for future drone strikes?
