The Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act failed to pass in the U.S. House of Representatives causing Democrats like Nancy Pelosi to pick up a tomato and start a political food fight over her belief that Republicans are “taking food out of the mouths of babies.”
Pelosi also added that “Two million families would lose their food under the bill, much less under the Southerland amendment.”
This amendment that Congressman Steve Southland (R-FL) proposed, passed the House by a 227-198 margin, “was based on the successful work requirements included in the bipartisan welfare reform law of 1996 that reduced welfare caseloads by more than 60% nationally.”
Unfortunately, some of my colleagues resorted to last minute political posturing and scare tactics that derailed an entire Farm Bill that America’s farmers and agricultural industries desperately need.- Rep. Steve Southerland
In other words, the amendment aimed at preventing welfare freeloaders from continuing to take advantage of the welfare program, and prevent others future “loaders” from doing the same.
Fellow Congressman Ted Yoho also disagreed with Pelosi’s statement, laughing it off by saying that it “will not take a calorie off of anyone’s plate,” then adding that there was a need to “weed out people that don’t require” from obtaining this government subsidy.
Its gonna make for people that really don’t need it, don’t ride the system-Rep. Ted Yoho
South Carolina Congressman Mick Mulvaney pointing out that the failed farm bill only allotted 20% of aid to agriculture, and the rest funding would go to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Mulvaney also said that Republicans even tried to appease Pelosi and friends by offering up an amendment to change the name of the Farm bill to “The Food Stamp Bill.”
Are Republicans taking food out of the mouths of babies? After all, Pelosi did say that the Republican Party was the E-coli party. Watch the video.
