Rick Scott Backs AZ Style Law in Florida; Bill McCollum Does Not

May 25, 2010 Commentary 34 Comments

The controversy behind the Arizona Immigration law has reached the sandy white beaches  of the Sunshine state. Just recently, U.S Senatorial candidate Marco Rubio caught a lot of flak for speculating that the recently passed Arizona law could lead to a police state.  In addition, Rubio also said that it would lead to ethnic and racial profiling. Rubio says that he supports Arizona’s right to do what it has to defend it’s state’s sovereignty by excercising it’s states rights. Rubio has been a strong supporter of legal immigration and is against any form of  amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Mr. Rubio provided further clarification to the Shark Tank on this exact issue.

Rudy backs Rubio

April 2, 2010 Uncategorized 47 Comments

See, I told you it was going to be a surprise.  Most people may not know this, but Charlie Crist backstabbed Rudy Giuliani in the 2008 Presidential primary by promising to endorse him as Governor, but instead endorsed McCain. Why did he endorse McCain? Was it because McCain offered him the VP position if he became the Republican nominee? Yep!  I know this first hand because I was told by the man himself, as well as his Campaign Manager, that Crist’s endorsement was imminent. When the day came for the endorsement, Crist was nowhere to be found. The next day Charlie was standing shoulder to shoulder with McCain giving him a full throated endorsement.
Does anyone out there think that Rudy forgot about this?

FL State Senate candidate weighs in on U.S. Sugar deal

March 31, 2010 Commentary 2 Comments

As the U.S. Sugar deal with the State of Florida continues to evolve, more state politicos are going on the record about the controversial deal that is fully backed by Governor Charlie Crist.  Many believe that this deal primarily benefits U.S. Sugar, its farm contingent, and their attorneys while putting taxpayers on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars . The Shark Tank will be keeping tabs on any new developments in regards to these negotiations.  I recently caught up with Sharon Merchant in West Palm Beach on Monday and asked her about her thoughts on the land proposal. Sharon Merchant is a conservative candidate running as a Republican for State Senate in District 27.

Francisco Rodriguez – Rising GOP star

March 2, 2010 Uncategorized 2 Comments

Up in Palm Beach County’s House District 83, Francisco ‘Cico’ Rodriguez is challenging Pat Rooney for the Republican nomination to represent the district.  Rodriguez has already mounted an impressive grassroots campaign that consists of dozens of volunteers that are already knocking on doors and making the need phone calls.  I sat down with Francisco for a brief interview to get him on the record about his governing philosophy as well as to get his take on his forthcoming primary race.

Here is a sample of what you will find when you visit his website.

One of Francisco’s greatest passions regarding government is our foundational document, The Constitution. Within this document are the guiding principles for state and national government, and therefore it stands as a plumb line for governing. Owing to the importance of the constitution, Francisco is an active member of the Constitution Committee of the United States. Additionally, Francisco is part of the advisory board for the West Palm Beach Chapter of the James Madison Institute. The James Madison Institute has been a solid foundation for free market solutions to social problems in the state of Florida.’

FL Senate slugfest spills over onto faith forum

February 27, 2010 Florida Review 16 Comments

At today’s Florida Family Council forum in Miami, the war of words between Senatorial candidates Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio took center stage as they vyed for the support of the attendees at this morning’s event.

The Democrat candidates were also in attendance.Democrat Congressman Kendrick Meek made it a point to proclaim that he is the pro-choice candidate in the Senate race by stating, “I am Pro-Choice”.  Meeks followed up that remark with, “I am running to be your Senator…“I am not running to be your pastor, not running to be your rabbi.”

Preaching to the choir, Rubio spoke of preserving the sanctity of (all) life and went as far as he denounced Roe v. Wade, stating that the decision should be overturned. “Senators can’t change hearts. Only God can change hearts,” proclaimed Rubio.

Crist supports counting illegals in 2010 Census, Rubio does not.

February 3, 2010 Florida Review 28 Comments

Governor Crist is blasting  his Senate Primary opponent Marco Rubio for his position of being against counting illegal immigrants in next year’s census.  Charlie, listen to what you are saying- these are “I L L E G A L” immigrants for goodness sakes!  Let me say it again, ‘ I L L E G A L’ immigrants!

This shouldn’t be too much of a shock to us since the good Governor supported the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill proposed several years ago. We all remember that the bill was shot down in a bi-partisan manner by the overwhelming majority of the electorate.  Today our friends at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported Charlie’s statement on the matter: “Florida deserves to have her fair share and I think that making sure that we count every single Floridian is vitally important. That’s why I went to that school yesterday in North Miami. It is important. It’s important to our state. It’s important to our people. The notion that you wouldn’t want to accept federal funding to make a political statement is absurd.”

The Crist campaign just responded to my request for a quote regarding the Governor’s statement. Their response in verbatim:  I think we are going to let this stand for itself.”

To be fair, I contacted the Rubio campaign for a response  to the Governor’s  attack and I received the quote from the head honcho himself, Marco Rubio- “ To use illegal immigrants in a census count for purposes of gaining Congressional seats and funding, dilutes the voting rights of citizens and encourages states to have as many illegal immigrants as possible”.

This is absolutely true! If we allow illegal immigrants to be counted in the census, new Congressional districts will be drawn up to meet those increased numbers, in those particular areas around the country. What is next, letting these same illegal immigrants vote in our elections?

To state that everyone needs to be counted so that the state receives her fair share is very troubling. In other words, Crist is telling us to disregard that fact that these people broke federal law by coming here illegally so that we can get a couple of more bucks? So we are being asked to condone this criminal act?

Sorry Charlie, but you are running on the wrong side of this issue.  Has someone informed you that this is a Republican Primary that you’re running in?

Kottkamp and Crist : Oceans Apart

January 31, 2010 Uncategorized 14 Comments

With all of the attention focused on the Congressional, State and the Senate race(s) here in Florida, there hasn’t been much talk about who will replace Attorney General Bill McCollum in November.  Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp has decided to finish out his term as the Lt. Governor and run for the Attorney General, a state cabinet-level office.

Kottkamp was nice enough to entertain my request for an interview last weekend at one of his campaign events in South Florida. The setting for our interview was one of the newest ocean cruise line ships, the MSC Poesia, which was waiting to set sail out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. You know the lyrics from the theme song from Gilligan’s Island? Well, I found myself singing that tune in my head as got myself lost and wound up walking aimlessly in circles as I tried to exit the ship, but that story is for another time.

The Lt. Governor struck me as a very approachable and affable fellow, as well as gracious with his time.  Lt. Governor Kottkamp has played ‘second fiddle’ to Governor Crist for the last several years, but based on our little sit-down, it’s apparent to me that Kottkamp’s views on policies and issues differ sharply with Crist’s.  In my honest opinion, Governor Kottkamp is a genuine Conservative Republican who is aiming to be the next top law man in Florida, but make that decision for yourself based on our interview below.

Senator Carey Baker-Candidate for Agriculture Commissioner

January 28, 2010 Florida Review 11 Comments

Florida Senator Carey Baker is a candidate for the Commissioner of Agriculture, a state cabinet-level office that will become vacant later this year.  On a recent trip to Orlando, I sat down with Senator Baker to ask him about his campaign for the office, and what the transition would entail from his present position as State Senator.  Baker’s candid interview elaborates on his personal background, his political career, and makes the case why he believes he is the best candidate for the position.

Rubio Climbs as Crist Continues to Fall

No surprise here that US Senatorial candidate Marco Rubio has surpassed Governor Charlie Crist in today’s Quinnipiac poll(47-44). What is surprising to me is, that in such a short period of time,Rubio has done what many thought to be the unthinkable-sprint past Crist!

Check out the Quinnipiac Poll results here.

To add a little salt to the wound, Crist has just announced that he reported $2 million in the last quarter-far less than what he reported in  prior quarters. Rubio’s fundraising has been climbing steadily.  Rumor has it that Rubio will post a very impressive number, one comperable to what obama crist-picCrist just announced. Wink Wink. My take on it is that if Rubio reports anywhere within $400k of Crist, you will see a huge surge in campaign donations to Marco Rubio. This a morter round across the bow of the USS Crist that will inevitably mark the beginning of  end for Charlie. No wait, I stand corrected. The beginning of the end for Crist was when he embraced President Obama and his disastrous ‘porkulus’ package on stage last year.

Hold the presses! How about a little more sprinkles of salt on that wound? Marco Rubio will be the keynote speaker at what is know to be the center of the universe for Conservative around the country-CPAC. Last year’s keynote speaker was non other than  the Majarushie himself, Rush Limbaugh. Rush has publicly stated that he likes Rubio and  said that he is ‘Reagan-like’.

This just in moments ago, Rubio announces $1.75M Quarter…what did I tell you?!

In preparation for her grand performance, the fat lady has begun her warm up…

Rubio’s Journey from 4 to 43%

The city of Miami boasts of having beautiful beaches, year-round sunshine and a bustling nightlife. The city is heavily influenced by Cuban exiles that fled the Castro Regime in Cuba after his seizure of power in 1959.  Indelibly scarred by the loss of their country and their culture, the Cuban-American community has come to play an extremely influential role within our country’s political landscape-and this next year will be no exception.
